Two-time Grammy-nominated Blues virtuoso, Joe Bonamassa, released a 2CD and 2DVD album, BRITISH BLUES EXPLOSION LIVE, on 17th May 2018, via J&R Adventures in North America and Mascot Label Group in Europe. BRITISH BLUES EXPLOSION LIVE pays tribute to the music of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. The show was recorded at Greenwhich Music Time at The Old Royal Naval College in Greenwhich, London in July 2016. Against a giant Union Jack backdrop, the New York-native masterfully performed songs from across the Atlantic, most recorded more than a decade before he was born. Perhaps the setting, more likely his lifelong love of the music of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, enabled the singer and guitarist to perform some of the most quintessential tracks of the past fifty years with just the right balance of reverence and reinterpretation. On that one night in London Bonamassa and his four-piece band created quintessential renditions for a new generation. Even without the visuals, on the 2CD edition of BRITISH BLUES EXPLOSION LIVE, the confidence, swagger, and sheer talent required to take on such bonafide classics and carefully selected obscurities is blindingly obvious. BRITISH BLUES EXPLOSION LIVE crackles with all the spontaneity, excitement, and raw power of a live performance. It’s so vivid, you can almost feel the few drops of rain that fell early on that July evening. Joe has risen from playing the small blues clubs of Britain to headlining the Royal Albert Hall to being a veritable guitar icon there. And being such an icon, it is impossible not to draw comparisons with Britain’s guitar icons of the past. Perhaps it’s seeing Joe play the music of three of the true all-time greats of British Blues, Clapton, Beck, and Page, that makes people realize, though, just how truly special he is. The buzz from the shows has been positively ecstatic. From the songs to the singing to the soloing, everything has been note perfect. After all, this isn’t your local pub’s Led Zeppelin cover band. This is one of the world’s greatest blues and guitar stars paying tribute to musical icons in a way that only a true master can. If the aim of the tour was to show his admiration and respect for his heroes, then mission accomplished. If it was to entertain his legions of fans along the way, then mission accomplished with bells on it. Page, Beck and Clapton may have been pivotal at the beginning of blues rock as we know it, but Bonamassa is at the forefront of its future. The Blues couldn’t be in better hands.
