It seems that Joe has been on a mission to record and release a live album from all of his “fantasy” venues. LIVE AT RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL is a delightful collection of songs that clock in at around seventy-five minutes. It features nine previously unreleased tracks and two just recorded songs. That’s just on the CD. There’s also a DVD that’s part of the package and it features over three hours of great stuff, including two and a half hours of live performance culled from his two sold out shows at the Radio City Music Hall, and some great behind the scenes bonus footage that includes his mom and dad giving Joe two cherished family heirlooms (sorry, you’ll need to get your own copy of this to find out what that is) and a little tour of his childhood home. This is all capped off with a 40-page book that is chock full of pictures and info. The package definitely was obviously put together with the aficionado in mind. It was released on 2nd October 2015. On 23rd January 2015, Joe Bonamassa took the iconic Great Stage at Radio City Music Hall for the first time for a sold-out, two-night run that allowed him to fulfill his lifelong dream of performing in one of the world’s most legendary venues. The history of the venue, coupled with the unique performance, make this a very special collector’s item, all beautifully packaged and designed for music fans everywhere who desire to relive Bonamassa’s dream-capturing moment for years to come.

The performances reflect a good chunk of what people were privileged to see during Bonamassa’s tour wherein the first half was an acoustic set and the second half featured his renowned prowess on the electric guitar. Interestingly, the CD does not totally mirror the set list on the DVD. There are just enough differences between the two to make it interesting. The acoustic material is very tuneful and provides a nice dynamic against the high energy electric set. All in all, LIVE AT RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL is more traditional both on the electric and the acoustic sets but never sacrifices the blistering lead guitar that you have come to expect from Mr. Bonamassa. This album has some nice variations on his style and as always the playing is flawless. There’s also the brilliant, and very interesting, documentary which charts Joe’s arrival at Radio City and which includes reminiscences, details about the technical set up of the stage and even a little bit of history on the venue itself. It’s a particularly interesting documentary and well worth the time, capping off a package that does not just reflect Joe’s amazing music but also the fulfilment of a young man’s dream to play one of the most iconic venues in New York. All in all LIVE AT RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL is an exceptional album, coupling a handful of his better songs together, without being anywhere near a Greatest Hits.
