CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA is a live album by Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Arnold, recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 24th September 1969. It consists of a concerto composed by Jon Lord, with lyrics written by Ian Gillan. This was the first full length album to feature Ian Gillan on vocals and Roger Glover on bass. It was released on vinyl on 21st December 1969 in US and on 10th January 1970 in UK. The original score for the concerto was lost in 1970. However, it was performed again in 1999 with a recreated score, and has been performed several times since. On 9th October 2012 a studio version of the CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA was released on CD and DVD. The recording features the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra sessions took place at Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, UK, on 1st and 2nd June 2011, followed by two days of overdubbing at Abbey Road studios, London, on 13th August with Jon lord and Bruce Dickinson, and on 20th October with Kasia Łaska, Steve Balsamo, and Joe Bonamassa. On 9th May 2012, Steve Morse took a few hours off from working on the new Deep Purple album in Germany to revisit the final, while Darin Vasilev added his guitar to the first movement in Sofia and in London. Mixing took place at Abbey Road Studios over two days in late May 2012. Jon Lord heard the final master of the recording a few days before his death on 16th July 2012. This edition includes standard CD plus a DVD-Audio with CONCERTO in 5.1 mix and a 20 page book with photographs from the recording sessions and an extract of Paul Mann‘s essay.

This studio account of the CONCERTO is Jon’s final statement of his prized composition. The most obviously divergent elements of the studio version are the performances of the new instrumentalists and vocalists. With due acquaintance, you will, soon become accustomed to the differences and happily embrace the latest members of the ’'group'’ and their contrasting take on the work. Very pleasingly, Jon’s Hammond provides some telling augmentations to the overall instrumentation. Of course, Ian Paice is a virtually impossible act to follow but Brett Morgan performs exceptionally well. Darin Vasilev very much makes the decisive first guitar passage his own. Bruce Dickinson appropriately pulls off his parts duly balancing aggressiveness and finesse. He affords a glowing contrast to the proceeding vocals from Steve Balsamo and Kasia Łaska and this provides a major bonus to this recording. The guitar contributions of the one and only Joe Bonamassa are stunning. Steve Morse provides another unforgettable contribution. Some of the rock/orchestral interaction is here probably the most pulsating yet you heard on CD. When it finishes it is very strange not to hear a roar of approval. The silence is, as they say, deafening. Some people have deemed the CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA a failure. Well, if Jon failed then all can say is: he failed quite gloriously! May God bless Jon Lord for using his musical talent and generous heart to unite different musicians and integrate contrasting musical forms into one joyous and glorious whole. It is perhaps fitting that Jon’s first orchestral work should also be his last. All those who worked on the studio CONCERTO have bestowed a fabulous and fitting memorial to the composer.
