BEACON THEATRE: LIVE FROM NEW YORK is the fifth live album by the American blues rock musician Joe Bonamassa. The album was recorded across two nights on 4th and 5th November 2011 at the Beacon Theatre in New York City and released by J&R Adventures on 2DVD on 8th March 2012, and later on 2CD on 24th September 2012 in UK and follow day in US. Joe Bonamassa is a guitar hero and a road dog - the blues-rock crusher plays up to 200 shows a year, and it's significant that of the fifteen albums he released between 2000 and 2012, four of them were live sets. BEACON THEATRE: LIVE FROM NEW YORK is a hefty two-disc set that features plenty of Bonamassa's trademark guitar work, at once precise and bombastic and firmly rooted in the traditions of British blues, and for this show he had Paul Rodgers on hand to lend appropriately swaggering lead vocals to a pair of Free covers, "Fire And Water" and "Walk In My Shadows". Two other guest singers pop up on this set: John Hiatt, whose craggy tone lends a welcome bit of texture to versions of two of his tunes, "Down Around My Place" and "I Know A Place", and Beth Hart, who has collaborated with Bonamassa in the past and lends her voice to spirited versions of "Sinner's Prayer" and "I'll Take Care Of You". There's no arguing the technical skill of Bonamassa and his band, who perform with the accuracy of a Swiss watch. Joe playing with all his might for a crowd who are clearly digging what he has to offer, and if, like many of his fans, you're convinced he sounds stronger and more powerful on-stage, this album will tide you over nicely.

Live albums can either be a really good idea or a fantastically bad one. If the utmost care isn’t given to the performance or the production there is little to no reason for one to re-listen to all the songs they’ve already heard a dozen times before. Thankfully, Joe Bonamassa’s BEACON THEATRE: LIVE FROM NEW YORK is a worthwhile effort, and one of the better live albums in recent memory. Bonamassa is as lofty a musician as ever on Beacon Theatre, and the album does a superb and sublime job of capturing the nuanced energy and expertise of a live his performance. The album is twenty songs long, so there’s a wealth of material here. On several tracks, Bonamassa shares some one-on-one stage time with friends Beth Hart, John Hiatt, and Paul Rodgers. The collaborations are natural and worthwhile, expanding the scope of the album. The presence of audience interaction is generously sparse here, leaving the bulk of the album to the music alone. Cheers and sing-along moments are minimized, allowing the listener to focus on the performance. And the performance sounds simply fantastic. Bonamassa has outdone himself here, amassing a huge offering of live experiences nearly flawless enough to be mistaken for studio work. The decision to team up with other artists was a good one, and little is left to be desired by this landmark live recording, and delivers ample doses of solid rock energy to fuel interest the whole album long. Overall, this is an experience to be treasured, and one that will impress. If you can’t find a way to see Bonamassa live, rest assured that BEACON THEATRE: LIVE FROM NEW YORK will be a great way to pretend you can.
