BAG OF BONES is the ninth studio album by the Swedish rock band Europe. It was released on 18th April 2012 in Japan by Victor Entertainment and on 25th April 2012 in Sweden by Gain Music Entertainment. More observant rock aficionados will know that Europe’s second crack at the whip has seen them evolve into one of the most consistently entertaining heavy rock bands on the planet. Their fourth album since reforming in 2003, BAG OF BONES signals the completion of an extraordinary transformation that has enabled the Swedes to win a fervent new audience and to claim a credibility that had previously denied them. This new album exists in a musical universe many light years away from that song’s cheddar-coated gleam, with strident blues rock and hulking grunge grooves replacing the overwrought keyboard fanfares of old. More importantly, these songs provide a showcase for Europe’s two not-so-secret weapons: frontman Joey Tempest’s vital vocals and the gloriously fluid guitars of John Norum. The ninth studio album from the Swedish metal veterans finds Europe singing the blues. Big, beefy, melodic, and bristling with '70s riffage and croaking Hammond B-3 swells, BAG OF BONES, revels in hard rock clichés, but does so with enough energy and attitude to warrant more than a cursory listen. The Led Zeppelin aping, as has been the case in the years since they achieved stadium rock sainthood with "The Final Countdown," is still in full effect, but at least they've got it down to a science.

What Europe played in the 1980s does not even count as metal by its current definition. Cold Chisel were heavier. But Europe weren’t pelted with bottles of piss or sharpened pennies. They weren’t even booed or jeered that much. Because they were heavy – much heavier than anyone but their loyal fans present had expected. With Last Look At Eden, the Swedes managed to blend the need to be relevant with the echoes of their glory days. BAG OF BONES is another big step in that direction. BAG OF BONES could have scored even higher with its one missing ingredient – one great rock song. Europe give the impression of an experienced athlete who ticks all the boxes, prepares perfectly, and maintains a consistently high standard. But is the personal best, the medal, the championship still in the future or back in the distant past? Experience and competence are well and good – but great rock required at least some recklessness and spontaneity. With Europe having now released four albums since the end of their thirteen year hiatus, the musical transformation of the band into a genuine blues infused juggernaut would appear to be complete. BAG OF BONES finds a group of musicians who are at ease with themselves. Put simply, Europe are a band on a roll. Since they came back together, Joey Tempest, John Norum, Mic Michaeli, John Leven and Ian Haugland have confidently made music that oozes class and while anyone who expected to begin another ''Final Countdown'' will have been disappointed, if indeed a little confused. For the rest, the results have been quite astounding. BAG OF BONES not only continues Europe's journey towards a rich Commercially driven Blues Rock style, it finds them delivering an album that even their comeback effort from eight years ago, Start From The Dark, only hinted at. Dark, intense and deeply personal, BAG OF BONES firmly plants it feet in the ground and proudly proclaims this is Europe 2012.
