GREAT GYPSY SOUL is a tribute album to former Deep Purple guitarist Tommy Bolin. Released on 26th March 2012, the album contains newly recorded music from original outtakes and alternative versions, with several modern musicians and singers performing singing on top of the original multi-tracks along with Bolin and his band. All tracks contain Bolin's original guitar work and vocals. There have been a number of Bolin tribute albums released over the years. GREAT GYPSY SOUL is the latest of these tributes designed to cement Bolin’s status, albeit with an interesting twist. Working from unreleased outtakes and alternate versions of songs previously recorded by Bolin, producers Greg Hampton and Warren Hayes brought in a cast of talented guest musicians to add their instrumental flavor to Bolin’s original vocals and guitar. The resulting effort is credited to ''Tommy Bolin & Friends''. One can’t deny the talents of the invitees to this party. In the absence of detailed liner notes, it’s sometimes difficult to separate the original performance from new additions, but Trucks’ flourishes on Bolin’s “Smooth Fandango” sound mighty good. Ditto for Sonny Landreth’s scorching slidework and Hughes’ throaty vocals on “Sugar Shack”. Hughes, with Bonamassa and Nels Cline, take “Lotus” to another spiritual plane altogether.

Tommy Bolin is one of those prodigious players who won’t stand with Page or Beck in terms of popularity or sainthood. Instead, his legacy as a guitar player’s player places him alongside other lesser known aces like Shawn Lane and Rory Gallagher. Bolin’s playing is unmistakably American. It features riff-oriented tunes with biting slide work, ripping solos and sing-along hooks. His blues-rock work would sound perfectly natural on, among other things, the Dazed And Confused film soundtrack. His playing not always displayed electric fortitude as many of his tunes lean on the melodically pensive side, thus revealing his jazz influences. Both of these identities are explored on the punchy GREAT GYPSY SOUL, a tribute album featuring some of ''nastiest'' players in the world. GREAT GYPSY SOUL is produced by Greg Hampton and superman himself, Warren Haynes. Using outtakes from Bolin’s solo debut Teaser, released in 1975, players create a seamless patchwork including Bolin’s original vocals and playing. GREAT GYPSY SOUL is a unique piece of work. Blessed and approved by Bolin's family, the original multi-tracks of his best songs have been reworked with the contribution of a great group of guest stars. Using the original recordings of his best songs never sounded so great, and at the same time still warm like the sound of the seventies.
