ALL OUT is a solo album from Don Airey, current Deep Purple and former Rainbow man. It was released on 19th August 2011 by Music Theories Recordings. Don Airey is one of the busiest keyboard players under the dome of Classic rock. His career spans over four decades, he performed with dozen of world-renowned artists. He largely eschewing the neo-classical approach of many keyboard players, here in favour of a more song based album and continues in the same bombastic style, with four keyboard and Hammond heavy instrumentals working seamlessly alongside six vocal tracks. It's just great music. All right, it may not be the world's most original album. The vocal parts all show a style of hard rock, and his two Hammond organs, amplified by Marshall JCM 900 and driven by the famous rotating Leslie speakers roar like hell. The hard rock based vocal songs are alternated with very impressive instrumental compositions. Carl Sentence is a great singer and well up to the job. He may also be held responsible for the lyrics on the album. All vocal songs contain excellent and catchy choruses and are all supplied with the necessary more than average guitar and keyboard solo's. Each song highlights another guitarist and this keeps every one of them interesting to the very last bar.
PERSONNEL: Don Airey - grand piano, Hammond, MiniMoog, Moog Voyager, Kurzweil PC3/K2661, Roland Phantom, Korg TR4/SV1, Nord G2, sequencer, electronics; Carl Sentance - vocals; Bernie Marsden, Joe Bonamassa, Keith Airey, Rob Harris - guitar; Laurence Cottle - bass; Darrin Mooney - drums.
Granted, there are a few instrumental numbers, but Don Airey's put together a core band that features former Persian Risk vocalist Carl Sentance, along with drummer Darrin Mooney who has played with Gary Moore amongst others, guitarist Rob Harris and jazz bass whizz Laurence Cottle . Add in a few special guests - Joe Bonamassa, ex-Whitesnake Bernie Marsen and guitar playing brother Keith Airey, and there's no doubt that it's a top notch band at play. However, one thing Don Airey is not renowned for is his songwriting. Scan down the hundreds of albums that he's played on, and you won't find many writing credits. And, to be brutal, you can tell why. You see the songs are serviceable, as they find a groove into between prog, power metal and soundtrack. It flirts with the world of Mr. Blackmores' Rainbow in places and on numbers like the instrumental ''Estancia'', things actually go all early seventies Deep Purple. Which is very enjoyable, no question about it. It's actually the instrumentals that come out best on the record, and you'd been happy to hear more of them, but that's a hard sell to a record company. Hence the vocal tracks. Of the vocal numbers, it's the hard rocking ''People In Your Head'' and the Bernie Marsden enhanced ''Running From The Shadows'' that come out best. ALL OUT does the travel music-wise. The songs capture the mood, sounds and feelings of different points in time. With most songs sounding different than their neightbours, ALL OUT offers a lot to discover but also leaves a feeling of being “just a bunch of songs” instead of something more monolithic. A good rock album – nothing less and nothing more.
