LIVE FROM NOWHERE IN PARTICULAR is the third live album by American blues rock musician Joe Bonamassa. It was released on 19th August 2008 by J&R Adventures and topped the US Billboard Top Blues Albums chart. Although his previous studio albums have rightly positioned him as the king of electric blues guitarists, Joe Bonamassa’s gut-wrenching expressiveness and technical wizardry are best experienced live. This blistering two-disc concert set captures Bonamassa’s brilliance on strutting stompers, aching laments, and, the highlight, a sweat-inducing medley. The CD here begins with the scorching yet simplistic rock riff of "Bridge To Better Days", a real taste of Bonamassa's modern blues, and a world away from the clichéd repeated lines of his old-school predecessors. That is not to say that there isn't any true blues on this disc, because the second track, "Walk In My Shadows", has that feeling, albeit in this modern setting. "So Many Roads" showcases Bonamassa's incredible soloing talents, full of melody and virtuosity in equal measure. "India/Mountain Time" is just about as inspirational as this type of music gets. The 31-year-old Brooklyn native isn't just a talent on electric guitar, however, as he showed on the opening track of Disc Two, "Ball Peen Hammer". But it's clear that the Les Paul is his favourite instrument, as it doesn't take him long to get back to glorious rock'n'roll, with a quite stunning "Django/Just Got Paid", featuring a rip into the solo section of Led Zeppelin's "Dazed And Confused". Bonamassa's admiration of Jimmy Page is clear throughout this tremendous set. Fans of the blues or standalone rock genre cannot afford to pass up this listening opportunity, nor can any fans of classic rock guitar playing, given Bonamassa's constant odes to Page, Gary Moore, and the great Buddy Guy.

On tour for the acclaimed album Sloe Gin, this double live CD was recorded during late 2007 and early 2008, and showcases the material well. This man is rightly heralded as a young blues genius and the guitar work is as excellent on stage as in the studio. Early on we get "Bridge To Better Days", "Walk In My Shadows" and "So Many Roads", which mix pace and feeling, and the balance of blues and rock is spot on. From rock to boogie and back again. Think Walter Trout in places, and the intro to "India/Mountain Time" has a Blackmore feel, before the track moves to a smooth blues. A contrast is the following "Another Kinda Love", a more uptempo Pat Travers feel, and the track "Sloe Gin" is a slow pleasure that builds nicely. In places the keyboards work very well and augment the guitar, but occasionally there is a cheesy organ that gives a bar/lounge feel. That said, Bonamassa's vocals are as heartfelt as the guitar. Check out the acoustic intro to "Ball Peen Hammer" on disc two and you'll know. "Django/Just Got Paid" is a lengthy 18-minute workout with a solid guitar solo, and changes in pace and melody to keep your attention. The problem with live compilations is you don't know what's edited out, in terms of song introduction or just general banter. This CD features virtually none, with what little there is faded out quickly. Purists may argue: let the guitar do the talking, but you may as well listen to the studio albums for that. A good live album, some great blues music.
