Joe Bonamassa- SLOE GIN- CD- 2007/2012-
- J&R Adventures Inc./Provogue Records/Mascot Music Productions And Publishing B.V.- 8712725721826- 400 grn
SLOE GIN is the sixth studio album by American blues rock musician Joe Bonamassa. It was released on 21st August 2007 by J&R Adventures and topped the US Billboard Top Blues Albums chart. The title of the album is a reference to the song of the same name by English musician Tim Curry from his 1978 debut album. Bonamassa has stepped up his songwriting and cut way down on his clichés, delivering in the process his most varied and impressive album yet. The lead track is an atmospheric gem, as is the title tune, a cover of a song written by Bob Ezrin and Michael Kamen. Bonamassa's singing on both of these is wonderfully nuanced and shows he can do way more than just shout out blues-rockers. Also worth noting is his Dobro work on a fine cover "Jelly Roll", and then there are the four originals songs, which show Bonamassa's continued growth and confidence as a songwriter. There are less of those flashy and jaw-dropping guitar leads on SLOE GIN, which is mostly a good thing, since it allows his increasing maturity as a writer and singer to shine through. This is a fine album, and one gets the distinct feeling that an even better one may be lurking just around the bend.
PERSONNEL: Joe Bonamassa – guitars, vocals; Carmine Rojas – bass; Anton Fig – drums, percussion; Rick Melick – keyboards, tabla; Bogie Bowles – hammered dulcimer, drums; Jeff Bova – orchestration; The Bovaland Symphonic Orchestra – strings.
SLOE GIN is a schizophrenic blues album that skillfully blends acoustic and electric and is arguably one of Joe Bonamassa's best releases. SLOE GIN is primarily a plum spirit. In the blues world, it's also the title of a Tim Curry song. For Joe Bonamassa, it is the title of his most schizophrenic album. Indeed, never stingy in experiment and always ready to take the listener to another way than the one proposed on the previous album, the guy takes up the challenge to mix acoustic and electric in the same album. On the time of a first session, he records in acoustic tracks enriched with a string section, the nostalgic with an incredible feeling, the groovy, an instrumental rich in zither, or the folk. And when he doesn't play alone, his band follows him to maintain intact the very roots atmosphere. If you had been able to appreciate on his previous albums Bonamassa's playing on an acoustic guitar, such a concentration of gems makes this album immediately indispensable. The most surprising thing is that these tracks are mixed with those recorded on an electric session. ''One Of These Days'' with its airy finale or ''Black Night'' with its heavy riff are so well covered that the original versions sounds very dull. ''Sloe Gin'' reveals on eighth minutes all the genius of Joe Bonamassa who, once again, transcends the original - intimate start, return of the orchestra, samples of police cars and majestic final, we are here in a real movie. In order to perfect the bridge between the two sessions, the genres mix skillfully by making cohabit the electric and the acoustic for an ultimate result, between the grace of the fragile touch and the force of the Blues-Rock. If the bet was daring, once again Joe Bonamassa, like King Midas, transforms everything he touches into gold and the pleasure of tasting the two facets of the artist with such an osmosis makes it perhaps one of the best opus of the artist.
