Ozzy Osbourne- UNDER COVER- CD- 2005- Epic Records/Sony BMG Music Entertainment- 828767431420- 400 grn
UNDER COVER is the ninth studio album by English heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne. The album consists entirely of cover songs, with an emphasis on rock music from the 1960s and 1970s. This is Osbourne's first and only album to feature cover songs from various artists. It was released on 1st November 2005 by Epic. Whilst Ozzy Osbourne cites The Beatles as his favourite band, his favourite song of all time is Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade Of Pale". He had wished to cover this song but was advised against it since it had recently been covered by a his "close musical associate" Zakk Wylde with his band Black Label Society. UNDER COVER is essentially an amped-up karaoke night in the Osbournes' basement lair, UNDER COVER is impeccably engineered and effortlessly played. Guests appearances abound, with Mott The Hoople's Ian Hunter choking out his original refrain on "All The Young Dudes", Mountain's Leslie West turning the amps up to eleven level on "Mississippi Queen", and blues-rock wunderkind Robert Randolph laying down some serious pedal steel on "Sympathy For The Devil". The Ozz himself is in good form, but as is the case with much of his later work, he sounds more like the tool than the fist. It's cool to hear some of these classic hard rock/heavy metal songs being played in a heavier and darker Ozzy Osbourne style. It's good to give a nod to your inspirations, but when it's a performer like Osbourne, who has made the shift from artist to product, the sentiment gets lost in the marketing.

The main difference is that this is Ozzy Osbourne, who throughout both Black Sabbath and his Solo career has caused many bands to cover his own work. First of all Ozzy's album, titled UNDER COVER is just an adaptation by Ozzy's favourite songs, so we shouldn't rate it as an original studio album. All in all the new album is listenable, but UNDER COVER is not a masterpiece, not a milestone in the metalhistory, it is just an evanescent laconicity for a die-hard metal fan. Few people have had an impact on (rock) music like this particular man. Ozzy fucking Osbourne must be one of the most respected men on this planet, this living god. If you collected all of the originals and started comparing, some of them were revived very well by Ozzy, others were just raped pretty hard. Some cool songs were just put in a new jacket. The sound quality of the album is superb, and most old-skool Ozzy heads will like this stuff. Now about the man himself. Considering his age and experiences, can understand why he wanted to do this, but he should also realize that his voice from, say like fifteen years ago is no longer present. He sounds more digital than vocal on this record. That guy has lived to the fucking max and he is the personification of rock 'n' roll. Who for instance knew that it was kind of a hobby for the rest of the Black Sabbath members to light Bill Ward’s beard on fire for fun? Hilarious! The only stupid thing about it is that it’s censored, so no fuck, shit and asshole over here. Old fans will be pleased with this, but no new ones will be gained with this record. He’s getting more digital with every album he puts out. Draw a line dude.
