A NEW DAY YESTERDAY LIVE is the first live album by American blues rock musician Joe Bonamassa. Recorded on 21st December 2001 during the promotional tour for Bonamassa's debut album A New Day Yesterday, it was released in March 2002 by Premier Artists. A NEW DAY YESTERDAY LIVE documents the final date of a sixty-day jaunt during blues guitar prodigy Joe Bonamassa's 2001 tour in support of his debut bearing the same title. What's clear is that the young guitarist's trio lacked nothing in terms of on-stage presence and performing tightness as compared to what was heard on said studio album. Their kinetic reinventions of oft-overlooked '70s rock classics such as Free's "Walk In My Shadows" and Jethro Tull's "A New Day Yesterday" instantly distinguish Joe Bonamassa from teenage blues competitors such as the overly Stevie Ray Vaughan-reliant Kenny Wayne Shepherd or the more purist and technically less dazzling Jonny Lang, and his better-conceived originals, "Colour & Shape", the wonderful "Miss You, Hate You", stand up under any circumstance. This was a great show. Unfortunatly most of the crowd became to intoxicated to help in the second take recordings of ''Miss You, Hate You'' and ''If Heartaches Were Nickels''. You'll however have be a big fan since that great show.

Think back to the last ime you went to a great rock show that you never wanted to end. You could feel the raw musical talent and electricity of the show through your entire body. Not only in the States, but also thanks to hard work in the studio and regular presence in Europe, Joe Bonamassa and his playmates Kenny Kramme on drums and Eric Czar on bass have become an extremely popular act in the global blues rock scene. Exhausting shows for the band and audience at the highest technical level are the recipe for success. A well-measured mix of traditional cover versions, which are often almost unrecognizable thanks to the fat, groovy, jam-like extended guitar arrangements, and modern original compositions, makes the hearts of both veteran blues fans and those of the new generation coming behind beat faster. Bonamassa and Co. do piecework in the truest sense of the word. This work perfectly conveys the completely relaxed atmosphere, not characterized by airs and graces. From the intro, a slide-soaked guitar orgy, it goes on to interpretations by Rory Gallagher's “Cradle Rock”, Eric Clapton's “Steppin' Out”, Jeff Beck's “Rice Pudding”, Jethro Tull's “A New Day Yesterday” and Free's “Walk In My Shadow” until the final “Don't Burn Down That Bridge” with a subtle cream character really gets down to business. The hut is boiling! Joe's strenuous handling of the pick and strings of his work tool, Kenny's drum roll in the background and Eric's crisp, pulsating bass set standards for a blues-rock trio. Even with somewhat quieter numbers like “Miss You, Hate You, “Colour & Shape” or “If Heartaches Were Nickels”, which is slightly reminiscent of “Stormy Monday Blues”, the audience hardly has time to breathe due to the integrated, intense instrumental passages. Enthusiastic shouts of “Joe-Joe-Joe” from the enthusiastic audience are the well-deserved reward for an unprecedented blues-rock spectacle, peppered with delicate guitar art. A NEW DAY YESTERDAY LIVE means seventy two minutes of getting excited about “Smokin’ Joe” as he lives and breathes.
