Queen + Paul Rodgers- RETURN OF THE CHAMPIONS- 2CD & DVD- 2006- Not On Label- No UPC- 300 grn
RETURN OF THE CHAMPIONS is a double live album by English rock band Queen + Paul Rodgers. It was recorded on 9th May 2005 during the Queen + Paul Rodgers Tour at the Hallam FM Arena in Sheffield, England (except for "Imagine", which was performed in Hyde Park, London immediately after that year's terrorist attack) and released on 19th September 2005. A companion DVD was released on 31st October 2005. RETURN OF THE CHAMPIONS was a collaboration between Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen and Paul Rodgers formerly of Bad Company, Free, The Firm and The Law. Guitarist Brian May had previously performed with Rodgers on several occasions, including a performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Following their hugely successful 32 date European arena tour Queen plus Paul Rodgers release this double CD capturing the magic of their performance. It isn't properly a Queen's album but a Queen and Paul Rodgers album. RETURN OF THE CHAMPIONS has twenty-seven tracks. "Reaching Out" is a Queen and Rodgers song, a kind of an introduction to the concert. Well, this is history of music becoming present... No one could and ever will replace Freddy Mercury. But for all the people who didn't have the chance to see Queen live, this must have been quite an event! History... Songs from the seventies, the eighties, very important songs which deserve to be played and heard even today. And no one better than Paul Rodgers, who made history by himself, could have done this. So no one's trying to replace Freddy, but to celebrate him, his talent, his legacy. Musically, this live album is solid as a... Rock! Emotionally, show must go on... must have been quite an event!

RETURN OF THE CHAMPIONS is undoubtedly slightly a different Queen's live album. So, for the purists to see the absence of Mercury is a true sacrilege and the fact that Deacon is also not there makes the case finally out of the question. But, for everyone else, can look forward to a terrific document of a terrific tour. Of course Rodgers can't be Mercury, at least as far as his unique personality and on stage performance are concerned. But, vocally he is really great. In fact, Rodgers isn't trying to be Mercury, and this becomes apparent during the all performance. Besides Rodgers, May and Taylor also shine in their respective solo spots as well as the show in general. In relation to the songs, the album includes some of the best and most known tracks of Queen, which are some of the greatest moments in rock history. With a combined track list that most bands could only dream of, the chosen repertoire definitely works for you. RETURN OF THE CHAMPIONS is really a great concert and it revisits almost all Queens' studio albums and all the live performance is great. For many of us, it's very refreshing to hear again these songs played once more by the few members of the original Queen's line up plus this front man, who is a legendary singer in his own right. The final result is more than recommendable and if you have an open mind you certainly liked it. They probably could have gone out years ago and gotten some Freddie Mercury's sound like. Still, they know very well that is completely impossible to imitate Freddie Mercury. So, they took the right decision and invite a singer who sounds nothing like Mercury.
