A collection of demos recorded among the Indian rugs and incense of George's living room to a four track tape machine shortly before the band began work on the White Album. KINFAUNS provide a more comforting, familiar feel to the White Album's songs. They are cozy, and though they sometimes feel incomplete, they still provide a different perspective on The Beatles' most ambietious release ever. Fascinating to see just how productive India had been for The Beatles (particularly Lennon) and the acoustic performances mostly have the songs down pretty tight even at this stage. Although Johns songs clearly needed the most work done to them in the studio to make them more coherent. There are also several songs here the Beatles didn't record Johns ''Child Of Nature'' which was later re-worked for ''Jealous Guy'' and the frankly bonkers ''What's The New Mary Jane?'', Paul's lovely ''Junk'' which appeared on his solo debut, plus tellingly three of Georges songs ''Circles'', ''Not Guilty'' and inexplicably the brilliant ''Sour Milk Sea'' which was given to Apple records act Jackie Lomax. ''While My Guitar Gently Weeps'' is interestingly done as a brisker, finger picked version with different lyrics. Whats striking also is that even though the performances are loose and often chaotic that they still are so entertaining. This long bootlegged collection appeared again in part on Anthology 3, but appears again in much better sound and in full on the White Album deluxe version. These things can often be barrel scraping exhibitions but KINFAUNS is actually historically fascinating and musically worthwhile. They were first recorded at George's home, his estate has possession of the tapes and has never sanctioned official release but after all the barrell-scrapings of the Anthology sets and related bootlegs, this set, especially in the post Unplugged era, would delight and astound a new generation and show just how good these guys actually were. If you're into the Beatles you can't miss this one, and if you little tired of them, this might open up a new perspective for you.
