The Beatles- LAST LICKS LIVE- CD- 2009- Toshiba-EMI Limited/Jasrac- 4915775169011- 150 grn
LAST LICKS LIVE was first released by Dr. Ebbetts in 2005 in excellent mono. It's a smooth, defined and equalized transfer of The Rooftop Concert on 30th January 1969 in London. The Rooftop Concert is The Beatles raw, in your face with all their swagger, jamming and letting it out like they never did before and, sadly, would never do again. Let It Be album and The Rooftop Concert to offer a latter day sounding Beatles. They really let it out for many of these tracks with the music sounding different than anything they had put out in the past. The Beatles brought out the best in Billy Preston who in turn brought out more of the Beatles. The famous concert that ends Let It Be the movie, plus some other odds and ends from the same month. Truth is, the band isn't exactly firing on all cylinders around this time, except for McCartney, who's in mighty form and if you've heard the official versions of these songs you've already heard 'em at their best. The back cover have the correct 10 track listing, and it show track 10 as being the new version of "Now And Then". Originally released by the Dr. Ebbetts label in 2005, this version of "Last Licks Live" comes from Japan on the fake "Apple" label and adds a new version of "Now And Then" as a bonus track. Fantastic set without a doubt, with superior packaging. Bonus track ''Now And Then'' - new version - this does NOT have The Beatles. Is the name given to an unreleased composition by John Lennon and was first recorded in demo form in 1978. Lennon wrote "Now And Then" in the late 1970s, around the same time as "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love". He recorded the unfinished pieces of music in a demo forms at his home at the Dakota Building, New York City, around 1979. In January 1994, Paul McCartney was given two tape cassettes by Lennon's widow Yoko Ono that included home recordings of songs. The songs on the tape included the eventually completed and released "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love", in addition to two other songs was a tape with the words "for Paul" scrawled hastily in John's handwriting, which included "Grow Old With Me" and "Now And Then". In March 1995, the three surviving Beatles began work on "Now And Then" by recording a rough backing track. However, after only two days of recording, all work on the song ceased and plans for a third reunion single were scrapped permanently. The only available recording of the song is Lennon's original demo. In February 2009, the same version of Lennon's recording was released on a bootleg CD, taken from a different source, with none of the "buzz" which hampered The Beatles recording of the song in 1995. A popular fan remix from 2007 called the "1995 Edit" consists of Lennon's original demo along with instrumental overdubs by an unspecified artist and samples from various 1960s Beatles songs. This remix does not contain any of the work that the three surviving members of The Beatles recorded in the 1990s. For Beatles obsessives only, but isn't that all of us? LAST LICKS LIVE is a well-crafted production, but is timeless and recommended without reservations.
