July 6th, 1957 in Liverpool, England, that the most successful and beloved songwriting team of all time - John Lennon and Paul McCartney - first met, kick starting The Beatles' career. McCartney was brought to the St. Peter's Church Garden Fete in the Liverpool suburb of Woolton by his and Lennon's mutual friend Ivan Vaughan, to watch Lennon's group The Quarrymen perform. 15-year-old McCartney was more interested in checking out the girls attending the Church social than the musical acts. At the moment that McCartney first laid eyes on the 16-year-old Lennon on stage, he was performing The Del Vikings' hit "Come Go With Me" - with almost completely improvised lyrics. After The Quarrymen's set, the left-handed McCartney impressed Lennon and the rest of the group by turning over one of the group's right-handed acoustic guitars and belting out a few Little Richard numbers and Eddie Cochran's "Twenty Flight Rock." Lennon was immediately impressed at the number of chords McCartney knew, as well as his ability to remember the correct lyrics to the songs. "As a kid, his mother was decreed to not be good enough to bring him up… His father had left the home when John was three. So that's not too wonderful," Paul McCartney recalled. "It made me realize why he had that vulnerability. I always admired the way he dealt with it because I'm not sure I would deal with the stuff he went through that well." McCartney announced the creation of what he calls "the final Beatles record", which uses artificial intelligence to extract Lennon's voice from old demos. John Lennon was shot and killed in December 1980 at the age of 40. End of 1963 to the beginning of 1964 — the explosive period in which the Beatles sensationalized and cemented their place in music history forever. John Lennon was one of the 60s true icons – yet his dismissive thoughts on the era still spark conversation. The Beatles legend dominated the cultural conversation during the decade, becoming a formidable figure within the counter culture. From those early singles to the peak of Beatlemania, on through the psychedelic period and those final recordings, he forged a path for others to follow. Lennon & McCartney remains a by-word in pop songwriting, a partnership much emulated but never bettered. The 60s, too, loom larger than ever – the spirit, ethnos, fashions, and music have never quite faded away. John Lennon’s verdict, however, was a little more acerbic. Once asked about the legacy of the counter culture, the Flower Children, and the Love Generation, he pointed out that while the fashions changed, the power structures remained the same. That said, he retained a love for the music itself. John Lennon regularly cited Procol Harum’s ''A Whiter Shade Of Pale'' as his favourite from the Summer Of Love, praising the ambitious structure of the international hit. Perhaps that was all the 60s really were – fleeting experiences, music, and… “whoooooooo”. The fact that The Beatles had convinced their producer to record their own material meant that the Lennon-McCartney pair were quickly recognized as songwriters. Paul and John agreed to always use both their names, even if a song was only written by one of them. The first of twelve studio albums, the debut long-play not only marked the start of a global Beatlemania but also the birth of a new way of making pop music that would inspire future generations of musicians. Must have item for every connoisseur and collector.
