Thunder- THE EP SESSIONS 2007-2008- CD- 2009/2010- AOR/Metal Heaven/Irond Ltd.- No UPC- 150 grn
This album just reminds of the fact of how good the quality of their music really is (and was). They are sorely missed. Anyway, back to this album, it's a belter! Not a duff track on it. Some live material on it too, to remind us of their ability to perform probably in their most comfortable zone. And some really great Thunder classic rockers mixed with brilliant ballads (don't they do 'em so bloody well!!) Thunder fans will not be disappointed with this album, nor should any true rock fan be. Should that really be it? Is THUNDER really over? Unfortunately yes, exactly a decade after the first split, the men want to go their separate ways again. Well, back then they found each other again after a three-year break... Whether general business frustration is the main reason or health problems of some band members, of whom we heard, play a role - at least the time of the breakup is not really understandable. Hasn't anyone told the band that their music is also trendy due to the current classic rock wave, how long has it been? Well, there's no use speculating, this CD is supposed to be something like a farewell album. However, nothing is completely new in this supposed collection of rarities. THUNDER have released three limited edition EPs (named "Six Of One...", "...Half A Dozen Of The Other" and "The Joy Of Six") with 6 tracks each in the last two years, around the time between to shorten their longplayers for the fans and distribute them via their homepage; at least originally, they can still be found in some online shops. And these mini-albums were now packed together for this round, shortened by two songs for reasons of space and mixed up from the order. So this chock-full CD is packed with a whole bunch of new and non-album tracks (two of them in different versions) and four live recordings (three of "Robert Johnson's Tombstone" and the well-tried piano ballad "Like A Satellite"). The rockiest of the new numbers can be found on the first half of the album; none of them super hits, but consistently earthy groovers that do justice to the band's good name. You can rely on the strengths and the charisma of the band, consisting of the characteristic guitars and the goose bumps voice of Danny Bowes. From the middle of the album, starting with the solemn "I Believe", it then becomes increasingly quiet. The balladesque moments are loosened up by a bluesy feel-good song like "See My Baby Walking" (greetings from CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL), but "So Sad Today" and "Only You Can Make Me Cry" still touch you sometimes intensively the tender streak of the fans and then lets it end thoughtfully with two acoustic versions. Unfortunately, "They Think It's All Over" is no longer included - which I would have somehow wished for in the live version as a hope-giving hint at the end... If you don't already have the songs on the shelf in EP format, you'll get a farewell of a sometimes very sensitive kind, which is ideal for mourning the suffering THUNDER fans. If you don't want to rely on the guys from the island seeing you again at some point in the future, you should also hurry up and attend a concert by one of the best live bands in the hard rock sector in the summer.
