Uriah Heep- LIVE: JANUARY 1973 / THE BYRON ERA- CD & DVD- 2005- Not On Label- No UPC- 200 grn
LIVE: JANUARY 1973 is a live album by British rock group Uriah Heep, released in April 1973 in the US by Mercury Records, and on 11th May 1973 in the UK by Bronze Records. It was the band's first live album. Mercury label initially re-released the album on CD in 1989 without the medley, due to time constraints. This was restored on all later editions. Remastered and expanded 2003 by Sanctuary Records. After scoring back-to-back album hits with Demons And Wizards and The Magician's Birthday, Uriah Heep had suddenly become a major attraction in the world of rock & roll. They capitalized on their newfound popularity with extensive touring and, their label decided they should release a live album. The result was LIVE: JANUARY 1973, the definitive live recording of the classic Uriah Heep lineup and a good indication of what made the group so popular among heavy metal fans during their heyday. The set list represents all the highlights of their albums up to the point, and everything is delivered with maximum energy before an enthusiastic Birmingham, England, crowd. Of course, uptempo rockers like "Traveller In Time" and "Love Machine" become especially muscular in this setting. "July Morning" gains a new, profound level of emotional power. "Gypsy", a rocker that is padded out to over twice its studio lengthy with lengthy instrumental solos that were probably more impressive in the live setting than they are on record. The band also pays tribute to its roots at the end, with an entertaining medley of classic rockers like "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Blue Suede Shoes". LIVE: JANUARY 1973 probably won't win over any new converts to the Uriah Heep cause, but it is a solid listen for the group's fans.

The previously unreleased footage of Uriah Heep from 1973-1976 was released on DVD on 13th July 2004. This DVD captures footage from what is considered the “classic” era of Uriah Heep when David Byron was fronting the band. Seventeen tracks never before available on DVD and all featuring the late, great David Byron at his very best. Byron was the original voice of Uriah Heep and for many fans was irreplaceable. Also featured in this edition is the only live footage of Gary Thain on bass, another much lamented casualty of the rock and roll lifestyle. The first three tunes are from a 1973 show at the famous Budokan in Japan. “Sunrise” and “Traveler In Time” are especially good. The next batch of video is from a show in Shepperton in 1974 where the band was promoting their Wonderworld album. Band churn out classics “So Tired’ from that record. After the untimely death of their bass player Gary Thain, the band recruited prog legend John Wetton for a couple of years. When it was time to tour for their 1975 release Return To Fantasy, they headed to the United States and recorded the next, and last, group of songs. Wetton definitely brought some more prog elements back and also helped with backing vocals. Watching Mick Box play with a cast is worth the price of admission alone. Footage from the Byron days is incredibly rare so you'll are proud to be have this wonderful film of the world's greatest rock band. The focus of this DVD is to release whatever footage was available from the Byron era. This is designed for Heep fans who were either too young to catch the Byron fronted version live in concert or those who did but want to relive those memories. If you are a die-hard Heep fan, this one needs to be part of the collection.
