KASHMIR: SYMPHONIC LED ZEPPELIN is an instrumental album inspired by Led Zeppelin songs. The music was arranged by Jaz Coleman, and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Peter Scholes. Album was released on 21st October 1997. Strangely enough, it works. These symphonic arrangements bring out textures and subtlety in their songs in a way never before heard. The English rock artist, Jeremy ''Jaz'' Coleman, has composed, arranged, produced and recorded many large orchestral works – based on the music of The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Nirvana, to name a few. His work has been widely acclaimed and his London Philharmonic recordings of both Symphonic Pink Floyd and SYMPHONIC LED ZEPPELIN, each remained at No. One on the US charts for more than a year. Conductor, Michael Woods works and performs with Jaz Coleman’s actual London recording scores. Since Us And Them: Symphonic Pink Floyd was such an unexpected success, a sequel was in order, so conductor Peter Scholes, Killing Joke's Youth and Jaz Coleman, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra decided to set their sights on another classic rock titan: Led Zeppelin. Although Zeppelin was known as the king of heavy metal, their music was actually subtle and textured, which makes it perfect for these lush, grandiose orchestral arrangements. Weirdly enough, these symphonic arrangements emphasize the compositional skills of Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Robert Plant, and John Bonham, since these replicate the dense arrangements of Zep records, only with symphonic instruments. Certainly hard-line rock and classical fans will object to the very idea behind KASHMIR: SYMPHONIC LED ZEPPELIN, but it's a surprising, even rousing, success with very little camp value at all. It's tough to do something like this well, but Jaz Coleman and The London Philharmonic Orchestra aren't half bad here. A lot of the readings leave a lot to be desired, particularly "Going To California" and "When The Levee Breaks", but others, like "The Battle Of Evermore" and "Stairway To Heaven", are quite beautifully done. You'll actually prefer this version of "All My Love", which isn't that impressive, but Coleman has breathed an impressive amount of passion into it. If you really like Led Zeppelin, check it out. Unless you really like Led Zeppelin, in which case the thought of this may make you puke. For those who aren't so into them, it may be worth a shot, but maybe not.
