Various Artists- L.A. BLUES AUTHORITY VOLUME lV: FIT FOR A. KING- CD- 1993/1999-

This is a tribute to one of the all time great blues guitar masters. If you're going to roll out the imposing roster of Blues Bureau International's chopmeisters, you might as well do it for a good cause. In this case, the cause is a good one, indeed: a tribute to the late Albert King. The lead guitars and vocals are contributed by the Blues Bureau International who's-who, as noted on the notes for each track. A special note about "I'll Play The Blues For You" by Frank Marino: ''Every time he shows up somewhere, I miss him more. This track is another good reason to bemoan the scarcity of this under-rated vocalist and monstrous guitar player. Listen to him sing this classic blues into something like a mourning lullaby; then hear him take completely unexpected melodic liberties over the changes during his lead break, his phrases both heartbreaking and lush, blazing and blue''. Frank Marino gets it every time. He always did. While you never get a good feel for either the feted artist or any featured performer on compilations like this, there is a kind of guilty pleasure about them. Fans of most of the players here for twenty years or more, and still get a vicarious charge out of knowing they're still out there firing off licks. Most of them recorded solo projects of their own on Blues Bureau International. Most of those projects come highly recommended. As for this one, check it out. If it sends you out to find more Albert King (or more of the music produced by any of this disc's eleven players) you're a winner.

Albert Nelson (April 25, 1923 – December 21, 1992), known by his stage name Albert King, was an American guitarist and singer who is often regarded as one of the greatest and most influential blues guitarists of all time. He is perhaps best known for his popular and influential album Born Under A Bad Sign (1967) and its title track. He, B.B. King, and Freddie King, all unrelated, were known as the "Kings Of The Blues". The left-handed King was known for his "deep, dramatic sound that was widely imitated by both blues and rock guitarists." He was once nicknamed "The Velvet Bulldozer" because of his smooth singing and large size – he stood taller than average, with sources reporting 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m) or 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m), and weighed 250 lb (110 kg) – and also because he drove a bulldozer in one of his day jobs early in his career. King was inducted into the Blues Hall Of Fame in 1983. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2013. In 2011, he was ranked number 13 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Great musicians perform smoking renditions of songs popularized by one of the all-time electric blues guitar greats.
