SNAKEBITE is the first official release by the British hard rock band Whitesnake. The original EP initially featured only four tracks and was released in the UK on 2nd June 1978 and never published in the US. This is little monument of the band's artistic history. It is historical because it establishes the Whitesnake style, which is so particular and which is not only due to the charismatic frontman's characteristic voice. What Coverdale offers us is a delicious mix of blues, hard rock and soul music, and if the dosage of these elements varies according to the tracks, none is ever completely excluded.
PERSONNEL ON SNAKEBITE: David Coverdale – vocals; Bernie Marsden, Micky Moody – guitars; Neil Murray – bass; Dave Dowle – drums; Pete Solley - keyboards.
The whole is full of paroxysm on the legendary ballad ''Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City''. A cover of the Bobby "Blue" Band, this song has become a staple in Whitesnake's repertoire because Coverdale has made it his own. As for the rest of the tracks, ''Come On'' sounds like the last Deep Purple before the split as the trio of Moody, Marsden and Murray set up the Whitesnake sound they would embody for most of the band's career. ''Bloody Mary'' is not a hymn to the famous vodka cocktail, but rather to a particularly sex-hungry woman. The piano that drives this boogie blues rock is no less reminiscent of a smoky bar atmosphere. SNAKEBITE is not the work of beginners. It remains a perfect and unavoidable introduction to the band's discography. A legend is born and the best is yet to come.
COVERDALE • PAGE is a collaborative studio album by English singer David Coverdale and guitarist Jimmy Page. It was released on 15th March 1993 by EMI in Europe, 16th March by Geffen Records in North America and 18th March 1993 by Sony Music Entertainment in Japan. Following the disbandment of Coverdale's band Whitesnake and a failed reunion attempt by Page's band Led Zeppelin, was proposed the idea to Page of the musicians working together. After meeting each other, they began writing songs, which were then recorded over the course of 1991 and 1992.
PERSONNEL ON COVERDALE • PAGE: David Coverdale – lead vocals, acoustic guitar; Jimmy Page – electric guitars, acoustic guitar, bass, harmonica, dulcimer; Denny Carmassi – drums, percussion; Jorge Casas, Ricky Phillips – bass; Lester Mendez – keyboards, percussion; John Sambataro, Tommy Funderburk – backing vocals; John Harris – acoustic harmonica.
Despite alt-rock dominating the charts and radio at the time, COVERDALE • PAGE initially sold strongly and eventually going platinum. But the album did soon fade from view, a proposed tour was axed, and the partnership quickly dissolved after this one album. In the end, Coverdale re-formed Whitesnake and Page finally joined up Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant in 1994 for a couple of new albums in the mid 1990s. But do you know what really is a loss? That COVERDALE • PAGE remains criminally forgotten, a lost Jimmy Page masterpiece that never really got the recognition it deserved. It is an important final moment of glory in the story of one of the greatest guitarists of the 60s and 70s – after that, there was No Quarter, he had a couple of great tours, and then that was pretty much the end of the story. If you love Jimmy Page, your music collection is woefully, woefully incomplete without some COVERDALE • PAGE.
