LOVEHUNTER is the second studio album by British band Whitesnake, released on 21st September 1979. The album was rather controversial. Not for the music, no that wasn’t it. It was that cover. And oh what a cover!! It was a picture of a beautiful lady straddling a huge snake. Oh, and she is naked!! At 10 or 15 years old, you would have really loved this picture-cover. The album became controversial because of its cover art. LOVEHUNTER's controversial cover art, showing a naked woman straddling a large snake and blood on her hand from a snake bite, was created by fantasy artist Chris Achilleos. Coverdale recalls such an idea was made as response to the critics, just to piss them off even more. Actually, it did spur more journalistic criticism for sexism, and the cover was "banned" at the time in the USA. Woman was partly covered with a sticker. Album sold in a brown paper bag, and in Argentina woman's was partly airbrushed with a chain-mail bikini bottom. It was the last album cover Achilleos designed for many years. The original LOVEHUNTER artwork was stolen in the 1980s. LOVEHUNTER was remastered and reissued in 2006 with four bonus tracks taken from Andy Peebles BBC Radio 1 sessions recorded on 29th March 1979 from originally the band's debut album Trouble.

For all of its musical merits, Whitesnake's second full-length album, LOVEHUNTER, is probably best remembered for its cover painting featuring a very naked female and a very large snake rather than the band's ever-improving recipe for blues-infected hard rock. Still, all things considered, the record is quite consistent. The band is equally at home rocking through the foot-stomping "Long Way From Home". "Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues" combines near-perfect songwriting with one of Coverdale's maturest and most compelling lyrics. It is another blues track and this one a little more bluesy then the rest. Lord’s playing is a standout, but it is Marsden that delivers a blistering solo that took the song to the next level. Next up we get a Leon Russell cover of “Help Me Thro’ The Day”. With this one you can turn the lights down, light a candle and sit back as David slows it down and puts on his sultry voice for this really sexy song. David turns on the sex appeal and is trying to get every woman to strip down and straddle his snake, like at the cover. “Mean Business” is a speed bullet of sound and has Jon Lord tickling that ivory faster than a speeding bullet. He is the Superman of this song and he even gets the solo on this one. “Mean Business” definitely means some business as it is a kick in the ass to get your heart pumping. The title track, “Lovehunter”, is full of David’s sexually inappropriate lyrics. His lyrics still rock. The song has the that blues tone and some serious slide guitar by Micky Moody and Neil Murray’s bass line is fantastic and lays down the coolest groove. Along with Moody’s slide guitar you get a twin solo with both Moody and Marsden. It is that duo that really brings this one home. The gorgeously simple piano treatment of "We Wish You Well" closes the disc in fine fashion. This is a classic Snake song as they play it as fans leave their concerts and it is fantastic.
