Album Art Analysis: Kala by M.I.A.

MIA released her second album, Kala, during the summer of 2007. The album’s cover is very colorful and unlike any of the other album covers in my iTunes library. Kala’s cover is hard to just glance over. Adorned with rebellious imagery and words like “Fight on,” in neon colors and bold text, the design is openly trying to attract a specific demographic and warns the consumer not to expect anything ‘typical’ from the album. Kala’s unique appearance, although quite obnoxious, makes MIA’s album cover an example of good design.
Due to mass access to media like the internet, consumers are bombarded with information and new products on a daily basis, if not hourly. In the saturated music industry, it is important to differentiate an artist’s appearance and sound from the competition to attract consumers. Standing out from the crowd is a path to success and MIA’s unique sound along with the album cover’s design helps to differentiate her as an artist and generate interest in her work.
