Glenn Hughes- LIVE IN WOLVERHAMPTON 2: OFFICIAL BOOTLEG- DVD- 2009-
- Thompson Music P/L- 09327066002351- 100 grn
Glenn ''The Voice Of Rock'' Hughes examines his own back pages on this historic in-concert recording. Over two nights, June 6th and 7th 2009, Hughes' enthralled hometown audiences with his unique brand of rock-funk when he packed out The Robin 2 Hotel in Bilston, Wolverhampton. The first night, billed as ''Glenn Hughes With His Full Band'' saw him performing music from his glory days with Deep Purple in 1973 on to 2009. Songs including ''Muscle And Blood'' from the album Hughes/Thrall, ''You Got Soul'' from Music For The Divine, ''Don't Let Me Bleed'' from Soul Mover and ''Crave'' from First Underground Nuclear Kitchen. The second night, billed as ''You Are The Music: An Evening Of Trapeze'' saw Hughes performing a full Trapeze set for the first time as a solo performer. Hughes delivered emotionally charged versions of songs taken from the albums Medusa (''Touch My Life'', ''Black Cloud'', ''Medusa'') and You Are The Music... We're Just The Band (''Way Back To The Bone'', ''Coast To Coast'', ''You Are The Music''). The music is often heavy, sometimes graceful and never less than riveting. Hughes' soulful, distinctive voice is superlative throughout, pleading, powerful and always from the heart. Beautifully presented with superb sound quality, this DVD is a must for the Glenn Hughes aficionado and fans of Classic Rock. LIVE IN WOLVERHAMPTON was released for the first time on 30th January 2012 and will definitely allow you able to re-live these electric and funky nights in Wolverhampton.
PERSONNEL: Glenn Hughes - Bass, Vocals; Jeff Kollman - Guitar; Steve Stephens - Drums; Anders Olinder - Keyboards.
Hughes has rarely performed in the UK before. The first band show that took place on June 6th, 2009 at The Robin 2 Hotel in Bilston, Wolverhampton. And it was a good, if short set, which packed in some excellent performances of tunes spanning his career from Deep Purple - a strangely subdued ''What's Goin' On Here'' and the obligatory ''Mistreated'' through the Hughes/Thrall tune ''Muscle And Blood'', on into his solo career with ''You Got Soul'' and ''Crave'' the highlights. The band this time around comprised Jeff Kollman, Steve Stephens and Anders Olinder, with Stephens' drumming a particular treat. Then it was on to the second night. Hughes dedicated the performance to the memory of his friend and former Trapeze guitarist Mel Galley, who passed away in July 2008. From the opening ''Way Back To The Bone'' from album You Are The Music... We're Just The Band - it's musical bliss with the whole of bar getting an airing. There's nothing from the debut album which is a shame, if understandable given it's hippyish flute and trombone parpings, but at least ''Good Love'', one of the new tracks on the '74 compilation "The Final Swing' gets an airing. The audio is excellent, and there's none of that fancy schmancy arty farty camera work that so many DVDs suffer from. It's "here's the band playing", as it should be. There are a couple of bonus features, one essential and one inconsequential. No-one will watch the visit to Molineux Stadium more than once, except Hughes himself and the dwindling number of Wolves football supporters. However, the interview with Trapeze manager and Hughes himself is genuinely interesting, something of a rarity in DVD circles. Definitely a DVD worth buying.
