It was released on 14th September 2004 by Passport International Productions. Written and produced by Steven Vosburgh, this had no participation from the Hendrix estate but it’s an excellent documentary. It’s available as a 2DVD set. Three hours divided into three chapters: 1942-1961, 1961-1967 and 1967-1970. There are interviews with Jimi, with Chandler, Kramer, Etchingham, Stamp, Mitch, Noel, Leon Hendrix, Joe Hendrix and other relatives, old school friends, his football coach, you name it. 1942-1961: The first part of this three-episode series takes us through Jimi's life in Seattle, Washington where he spent two-thirds of his twenty-seven years. Through the recollection of his closest friends and family, you enter into the inner world of Jimi's childhood upbringing. This is where you come to know the people and events that would shape his love for music and define the extraordinary man he would become. 1961-1967: After Jimi's stint in the army, you join him as a sideman on the Chitlin' Circuit playing behind some of the greatest names in R&B. After following Jimi to New York, you head off to the UK where Jimi Hendrix became the toast of swinging London virtually overnight. Hear directly from the British rock stars and scenesters who witnessed Jimi's musical coup d'état firsthand. Then follow The Jimi Hendrix Experience on their way to becoming the hottest rock trio on the world stage. 1967 - 1970: Part three highlights the culmination of Jimi's musical career. It was the peak of the counter-culture era and the world was changing at an incredible pace. Jimi's music and lifestyle were no exception. Here is where you follow Jimi to the height of his creative powers, both in the studio and on the road. Through exclusive interviews, you get the facts behind Jimi's demise and examine the events surrounding his controversial death. But more than that - you come to know the spiritual message behind Jimi's work and celebrate the final stage of his life in music. Even if you have read quite a few books about the man but you'll be learn a few things watching this. A must-have for Hendrix scholars but the final chapter is full of errors, for example: – Mike Jeffery willfully poisoned Jimi with bad acid at Madison Square Gardens in 1970 – untrue; – Mike Jeffery had Jimi kidnapped – untrue; – The Aleem twins saying Mike Jeffery owned Jimi’s publishing company Bella Godiva – untrue (it was all Jimi’s); – Jimi was toured till he dropped – untrue; – Steve Roby saying Jimi had lain dead for 5 hours at The Samarkand – untrue (he died in the ambulance); – etc. Anyway the first two chapters are essential viewing. There is no Hendrix music at all in the film but some clever Hendrix-style guitar playing in the background and it works in quite well. The DVD set is not endorsed or authorized by The James Marshall Foundation or Experience Hendrix, which is probably the reason the music was not allowed to be used. Lack of music aside and the puzzling fact that the three-hour program is spread over two discs, it may be safe to say JIMI HENDRIX: THE UNCUT STORY is one of the best documentaries on the life of Hendrix that has been made. Fans looking for the story behind the music will be pleasantly surprised.
