Jimmy Page & Robert Plant- KOLN 1998- DVD- 2009- Not On Label- No UPC- 100 grn
Jimmy Page & Robert Plant Tour Walking Into Everywhere: the rainy festival appearance as headliners at Bizarre at the Butzweiler Hof in Cologne, the line-up also included Portishead, The Cure, Iggy Pop etc. These were also supposed to be the last appearances of the Jimmy Page & Robert Plant project. Since 1995, the two men had re-arranged Led Zeppelin pieces in an emphatically “unled” way with classical and Egyptian orchestras, played with Moroccan musicians or traced the songs back to their Celtic folk roots. With their second album Walking Into Clarksdale the two presented themselves with new songs and a reduced core band. On the accompanying tour, the orchestra, hurdy-gurdy and accompanying musicians were omitted. With a classic rock line-up, Page & Plant played their way through a program with great enthusiasm that consisted of 70% changing Led Zeppelin songs - in the old rock arrangements.
PERSONNEL: Jimmy Page - guitars; Robert Plant - vocals; Charlie Jones - bass; Michael Lee - drums; Philip Andrews - keyboards.
With Charlie Jones (Robert Plant's son-in-law) on bass, Michael Lee on drums and a concentrated Jimmy Page in top form, a modern, refined and contemporary Led Zeppelin sound was created - with a touch more emphasis on the psychedelic part. You can hear the instrumental passages in “Babe I'm Gonna Leave You” and “How Many More Times”. of the catalog. Many people liked the late Michael Lee on drums on this tour even better than Jason Bonham at the reunion show in 2007. Unbelievable then as now that old warhorses like “Rock And Roll”, “Heartbreaker” and other rock milestones were performed faithfully and as a full rock board. Highlight: The dramatic, wild “How Many More Times” with an extended guitar jam and violin bow solo. As in the best of Zeppelin times, there was even an acoustic set - for which dug up the enchanting and the stomping and whipping "Gallows Pole". Hearing Plant's mature and expressive voice in these revived originals will you a delight. Also unforgettable is how these concerts all opened after the casual Egyptian intro with the powerfully hammering “The Wanton Song”, another buried number rediscovered. Michael Lee did Bonham's legendary bass drum shuffle roll all honor, when the riff pauses for a moment. The new pieces also fit into the program. “Most High” was even a minor hit with Arabic influences and a hypnotic guitar riff reminiscent of “Kashmir”. “Walking Into Clarksdale” is a wild Bratz guitar excursion. “Heart In Your Hand” is a fine and reduced ballad with tremolo surf guitar. Strong new material was presented alongside the old hits and Led Zeppelin's music was celebrated with dignity - without it becoming a tired oldies best-of event became. The performance at the Bizarre Festival was recorded in full by WDR-Rockpalst and can be seen here.
