LIVE FROM THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL is the fourth live album by American blues rock musician Joe Bonamassa. Recorded on 4th May 2009, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, it was released on 22nd September 2009 by J&R Adventures. This stunning headline show from the Royal Albert Hall, which featured guest spots by Eric Clapton and Paul Jones, was released on DVD, and this two-disc set marks the first official release of the concert as an album in and of itself. In reference to that ultimate concert experience, Joe states in the DVD’s onset, “You only get one shot to make it right”. As his fantasy becomes realized, the trepidation is compounded when his longtime idol, guitarist Eric Clapton. Does Joe get it right? He certainly does. He walks onstage playing the howling intro notes as the jam-packed hall welcomes him with a standing ovation. Eric Clapton takes to the stage for an exhilarating “Further On Up The Road”, in which both virtuosos take turns singing and soloing. In the intro to DVD two, Joe talks about his early influences. A slide show of the young musician alongside some of them, most notably B.B. King, right before his twelfth birthday, ensues during the conversation. He explains that the chance meeting led to an opening slot with the great bluesman, a show in front of 5000 people. Highlights on the second DVD include Sonny Boy Williamson’s “Your Funeral My Trial”, with Paul Jones on blues harmonica. It’s extra nice here in the Royal Albert Hall setting, placing him on a pedestal with Clapton and the best of them. For long-time fans of Joe Bonamassa, those who’ve been around since his early days, this DVD is a gratifying keepsake of a major highlight in the musician’s career.

This is more than just a concert video. It’s the realization of a life long dream after twenty years of dedication and hard work. And the DVD captures that moment in time beautifully. More than a dozen cameras focusing on all possible angles are perfectly timed with broad shots of the stage and hall, helping give you the sensation of being there. But be forewarned, the results may make your heart skip a couple of beats. There are so many great songs and moments on LIVE FROM THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL that’s its impossible to go through them all in one post. Everyone who views the DVD is going to have their personal favorite songs. The addition of veteran drummer Anton Fig together with a horn section adds a dimension that takes the music to a cool new level. Bonamassa, still only 32 years of age, shares his gift with a knowledge and respect for many of the great blues/rock artists. It’s difficult for anyone who appreciates music in general not to be impressed here. Bonamassa’s whole team deserves a lot of credit. This is a definite must own for anyone looking to be swept away in a solid dose of positive and entertaining energy. The included booklet contains an excellent description of Joe’s gear, so there’s no need to go into much detail here. However, besides five Les Pauls, his Ernie Ball/Music Man John Petrucci Baratone is a very nice instrument, and full of colorful tone. He used that as well as a 2009 Music Man 25th Anniversary Hardtail. All were plugged into his ’87 Marshall Jubilee and others. The DVD tone is impeccable throughout.
