Led Zeppelin- THE COMPLETE EARL’S COURT- 2DVD & CD- 2006- Not On Label- No UPC- 300 grn
For the next three hours, your mother wouldn’t like it... EARL’S COURT 1975 were five concerts performed by the English rock band Led Zeppelin at Earl's Court Arena in London in May 1975. By 1975, Led Zeppelin were the undisputed heavyweight champions of the rock 'n' roll universe. That year, all six of the band’s records had re-entered the charts in the wake of the release of Physical Graffiti, and their tour of North America had been one of the most lucrative of all time to that point. They capped off what had already been a banner year with a career-defining five-night residency at London’s Earl's Court Exhibition Centre. Boogie Mama Label have pressed onto DVD the EARL’S COURT footage. The fourth of five shows in London that May, this first received widespread circulation as EARL’S COURT, LONDON, UK, MAY 24, 1975 on 2DVD. In line with their other DVD release, they utilize DVD9 technology to fit the entire three hour plus show. Watching the video is valuable because, although the aural experience is key for music, watching the musicians embody the music also enhances the overall effect. The video is a competent combination of close ups and wideshots showing both their facial expressions in reaction to the music and their interaction with one another. As such it is good theater: meaningful watching that holds ones interest. At this point in their live career Led Zeppelin were a compelling live act producing such massive music in a shroud of mystery. Zep's best songs convey a sense of journey and movement. “The Song Remains The Same”, “Kashmir”, “No Quarter” and “Stairway To Heaven” all bring the participant into a liminal state which is exciting. But this sense is embodied in kinetic movement and grand gestures onstage recalling archetypes of strength and power. It is this aspect of Led Zeppelin, almost completely lost on audio recordings, which is captured very well on video recordings such as these and make this an essential piece for the collection. Boogie Mama Label utilize a cardboard sleeve with photos from the EARL’S COURT concerts. It is basic and used by many different labels, but the point is made that the contents contain the May 24th EARL’S COURT show, one of the best of their career available in an excellent, almost complete video document. A professional camera crew shot the film and portions, including “Tramped Underfoot” and “Stairway To Heaven,” were used on their 2003 DVD Collection. The audio feed from the shoot leaked out many years ago and the sound is pristine.
