Rock Aid Armenia, also known in earlier stages as Live Aid Armenia, was a humanitarian effort by the British music industry to raise money to help those affected by the 1988 Armenian earthquake. Initiated by the international charity campaigner Jon Dee, the project comprised a number of singles, compilations and a documentary. A special record label Life-Aid Armenia Records was established for producing and distributing the releases by Rock Aid Armenia. The project is most remembered for a re-recording of Deep Purple's famous hit song, "Smoke On The Water", with different vocalists singing each verse. The track was recorded by an elite group of contemporary progressive rock, hard rock and heavy metal musicians who gathered at the historic Metropolis Studios in Chiswick, London. Recording began on July 8, 1989 and was completed over 5 different sessions. John Paul Jones and Jon Lord were credited as "helping" behind the scenes with the track. Due to Brian May's arm injury, session guitarist Geoff Beauchamp stepped in to fill in the guitar tracks while he makes a recovery. In 1990, the song was released with an alternate mix. The recording sessions for the re-recording of "Smoke On The Water" were filmed and released in the same year on video as Rock Aid Armenia: The Making Of Smoke On The Water, along with interviews and a video clip for the single. The final extended version of the documentary was released on Laser Disc and VHS in Japan in 1991. The organization has since been made available for viewing via YouTube.

21st Anniversary of release CD's Rock Aid Armenia’s SMOKE ON THE WATER includes fourty minute documentary for the first time on DVD. Deluxe two disc (CD/DVD) edition of this reissue of the 1989 benefit CD now expanded and including a documentary DVD. Rock Aid Armenia: SMOKE ON THE WATER: THE METROPOLIS SESSIONS was released on 22nd October 2010. The lineup of this project is kind of amazing. That features two main people who contributed: Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi. In addition to these heavy hitters, there are contributions from Bruce Dickinson, Brian May, Ritchie Blackmore, Alex Lifeson, David Gilmour, and other big names in the hard rock world. This release has four mixes of the recording of "Smoke On The Water". They're all interesting, and the final product is good with all the additions that these artists have brought to the table. The CD maxi single with the similar-sounding ''Smoke On The Water'' mixes is hardly an incentive to buy, but the bonus DVD is more so, especially the 42-minute "The Making Of" with its interesting insights into the coexistence of world stars in a relatively relaxed atmosphere, especially such as Ritchie Blackmore. ''The Making Of" documentary is very good, especially with footage of the musicians recording their takes. The recording is more of a novelty than it is serious, but it was for a good cause with excellent musicians.
