Uriah Heep- RAGING THROUGH THE SILENCE: Special Deluxe Edition- DVD & 2 CD- 1999/2017-
- Uriah Heep Records- 5060105490637- 700 grn
This album has only ever been available on VHS, originally released on 11th September 1989, and this is its first 2CD and DVD release ever. This concert was the band's 20th Anniversary show. Also this release is the third on the band's own Uriah Heep Records and was supported by a full worldwide marketing campaign. This re-release was released on 8th September 2017. Many of the tracks were in the set on the Raging Silence Tour, as documented in the video RAGING THROUGH THE SILENCE, and some have been featured in subsequent sets. The Raging Silence Tour marks the end of Heep’s wilderness years and the start of their renaissance with singer Bernie Shaw that has continued ever since. Not that it felt like anything momentous at the time. The Raging Silence Tour might have marked their 20th Anniversary, but having been through fifteen lineup changes before Shaw’s arrival in 1986 there wasn’t much to celebrate. All semblance of continuity had gone. Shaw was their fifth vocalist in the ten years since David Byron had been fired, but crucially he had both the voice and the frontman persona to stop the rot. The Raging Silence album that preceded the tour, four songs from which are included here, was a cautious affair that the Heep fan seldom plays, but RAGING THROUGH THE SILENCE demonstrates that playing live Uriah Heep were already in recovery and Bernie Shaw had mastered their 70s greatest hits.
PERSONNEL: Bernie Shaw - lead vocals; Mick Box - guitar, background vocals; Phil Lanzon - keyboards, background vocals; Trevor Bolder - bass, background vocals; Lee Kerslake - drums, background vocals.
While there's undoubtedly an ever growing mountain of Uriah Heep live releases, for many hardened Heepsters, RAGING THROUGH THE SILENCE will be the long lost piece of the puzzle. Originally released in on VHS, this 20th Anniversary celebration has never been reissued since, so the most ardent fans, in all likelihood, they haven't actually heard it for many a year. It's to Shaw's great credit that his vocals not only keep pace, but in many places are actually the most eye catching feature. No wonder he's gone on to become the band's longest serving singer by many a year. Although, there's little doubt that the main man is guitarist and founder member Mick Box, who not only nails every one of the mighty riffs, but also provides a trademark solo slot in grand style. With the band making a concerted effort to ensure that their catalogue is fully available on digital formats, there's now the opportunity to partake in this 2CD and DVD set, which also features a twenty five minute interview with the band. While there's also a very brief archive piece of interview with the band's original singer David Byron, where he explains why he left Uriah Heep, which Mick Box pretty much agrees with. The quality of the video on the DVD is quite good, and the audio on both that and the CDs is excellent. Uriah Heep fans will most definitely want and need this for their collections. The perfect birthday present for the Uriah Heep fan in your life. Watch their eyes well up as they tear open the wrapping paper and find the missing link in their voluminous collection: a 2CD/DVD package of the band’s 1989 London Astoria show, previously available only on VHS.
