Thunder are a British institution. One of the best live bands that had the pleasure of ever watching performing live, that managed to pretty much cover all bases. Awesome musicianship, electrifying performances, great songs and they actually had that overall feel-good factor... that unspeakable something that you cannot set in words but you just feel it, when you GET ROCKED! Despite the success of their studio work, Thunder are primarily a great, crowdpleasing live band. It’s no surprise, then, that this set features a pair of excellent performances with very vocal contributions from the Donington hordes. However, it’s a shame that the shows are only two years apart, so four of Disc One’s seven tracks reappear, in very similar performances, on Disc Two, as part of a performance that took place two days before the release of the group’s second (and biggest) album, Laughing On Judgement Day. The saving grace is the band, who are clearly having a good time and are on top form throughout. Danny Bowes is the perfect hardrock frontman, with Daltreyesque tones lifting the band’s sometimes cheesy anthemic tunes (Dirty Love, She’s So Fine) out of the realm of nostalgia and into classic-rock territory. Both discs also showcase his mastery at communicating with even the biggest crowds with effortless humour and good cheer. Listening to it all back-to-back is perhaps inadvisable but, even so, this is an excellent monument to one of the UK’s great hard-rock acts. Scheduled to include three previously unreleased tracks.
