The DVD LIVE FROM AUSTIN, TEXAS is the combination of the two appearances made by Stevie Ray Vaughan on Austin City Limits, a television show obviously made in Austin, Texas. The first was in 1983 as a slightly unsure, raw talent and the second in 1989 as an assured performer, comfortable with his talent. Blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan was already a legend when he was killed in a helicopter crash in 1990. Like all talents who die early, he has left behind a legacy of myths and stories concerning his complex life and persona. This very special video release (which contains a 1983 and a 1989 appearance on the television show "Austin City Limits") provide a glimpse into the mythical musician at the beginning and the end of his short career. Eleven tracks are virtuostically performed here; half by the young, newly successful Vaughan, and half by an older, calmer and more together Vaughan. An intriguing musical look at the evolution of a man who became a myth.
LIVE AT CARNEGIE HALL is such an album. October 4, 1984 was an evening of milestones for Stevie Ray Vaughan. Having turned 30 the night before, Vaughan approached this gig at "the most difficult place in the States to get a booking at" with an abundance of enthusiasm and honor. Mentor John Hammond Sr. was tapped for introductory duties, special outfits and risers where designed and a big band that included singer Angela Strehli, the Roomful Of Blues horn section, brother Jimmie and Dr. John expanded the Vaughan's Double Trouble trio for the only time in the band's history. The first half of the set showcased Vaughan's clean, razor-sharp riffing ("Scuttle Buttin') alongside excellent rhythm playing and a mastery of dynamics ("Testifyin'). Always quick to credit his influences, Vaughan peppered the latter half of the show with numbers by his heroes Guitar Slim ("The Things I Used To Do," "Letter To My Girlfriend"), Albert Collins ("Iced Over") and Albert King ("C.O.D."). Closing out the evening as a lone instrumentalist, he performed "Lenny" and "Rude Mood," evocative reminders of the great loss suffered in a helicopter crash six years later.
