THE VERY BEST OF… SLADE is a DVD compilation album by the British rock band Slade. It was released on 28th November 2005. A CD of the same name was also released at the same time. It features the same material that had appeared on the 1991 VHS compilation Wall Of Hits. In addition, the band's 1972 Set Of Six for Granada TV is included, alongside an additional number of other clips. Slade were the definitive 70's glam rock band with fourteen UK Top 10 singles between 1971 and 1975. Slade were noted for large platform shoes, reflective clothing, bad spelling and being from the Midlands. This is the definitive DVD from one of the biggest UK bands of the 1970's and a MUST HAVE for Slade fans. The DVD compiles performances from a number of TV shows, video clips and a new commentary from Noddy Holder.
COMPILATION INCLUDES:
* Wall Of Hits;
* Set Of Six - Live (From Granada TV’s Set Of Six);
* More Hits.
THE VERY BEST OF… SLADE effectively renders every past Slade hits collection redundant, as remastered sound and a sharp eye for all the band's U.K. chart entries serve up a peerless examination of what remains one of British rock's most flawless careers. No matter that the hits went so badly off the boil around 1975-1976 - still, as Slade's mid-'80s renaissance delivers further smashes "My Oh My" and "Run Run Away." Which would be hits enough for anybody, but the fun doesn't end there. A bonus then digs into the darker recesses of the Top 75 to pull out the band's lesser successes, a mixed bag that runs from the 1980 live version of "Born To Be Wild," and more. It's not a complete guide to Slade on 45 (there's no "Give Us A Goal," for a start), but it comes close enough.
PERSONNEL: Noddy Holder – lead vocals, rhythm guitar; Dave Hill – lead guitar, backing vocals; Jim Lea – bass, piano, violin, keyboards, backing vocals; Don Powell – drums.
An awkward little beast, this. On the one hand, if you have the VHS Wall Of Hits collection that memorialized the best of Slade at the end of the '80s, the run of early-'70s TV and video hits that make up a chunk of this collection will seem more than a little familiar. From "Coz I Luv You" to "Radio Wall Of Sound," the program plays out precisely as you remember it, and doesn't even seem to have been remastered for the occasion. Several performances even lose their last few seconds, just as they did on the video. Judge this collection by those standards, and it's a bit of a disappointment. But then you switch to the bonus features, and your eyes pop out of your head. Under the banner "More Hits," six U.K chartbusters that were omitted from the VHS play out in all their glory, among them "Everyday," "In For A Penny" and "How Does It Feel." Watch them and wonder why they were omitted the first time around, because they're all just as good as they ought to be, and they still reveal a side to Slade that it's too easy to overlook. The other bonus feature, "Set Of Six," is just that [a six] song performance for U.K. TV in 1971, mixing the best of the then-recently released Slade Alive! album with the band's three hits to date: that is, "Get Down And Get With It," "Coz I Luv You" and "Look Wot You Dun." And all six are sensational, even if the broadcasters did decide to fade the closing "Born To Be Wild" long before its time. Quality footage of Slade in concert from this period is very scarce indeed; effortlessly overriding the antiseptic mood of the television studio, this stunning performance will let you know what you're missing.
