IN VIEW 1988 - 2003: THE BEST OF R.E.M. is a DVD featuring videos by the rock band R.E.M. from 1988 to 2003, released as a companion to the Warner Bros. compilation In Time: The Best Of R.E.M. 1988-2003. All but two of the songs included on the audio CD made the DVD—the exceptions being "All The Right Friends" (which had no official music video) and "Animal" (the video for which was not shot until early 2004). Timed to coincide with the CD collection In Time, IN VIEW presents 15 years of innovative videos from alternative pop pioneers R.E.M. Throughout the ups - the multi-platinum success of 1991's Out 0f Time - and downs - the abrupt 1997 departure of original drummer Bill Berry - of their Warner Brothers years, R.E.M. has consistently illustrated their music with something more substantial than simple performance promos. IN VIEW boasts 22 videos, 16 interview and performance snippets from throughout their career, and three songs recorded live in London in 2001. Highlights include the Western movie motif of "Man On The Moon," introspective traffic jam of "Everybody Hurts," and fanciful animation of "I'll Keep The Rain (starring a sleepy-eyed, button-nosed pup with crown of gold). Bonus points for the cameo by punk priestess Patti Smith in "E-Bow The Letter" and hipster actor Richard Edson (''Stranger Then Paradise'') in the faux Italian melodrama of "Bittersweet Me." Sequenced in reverse chronological order, these videos show Stipe in his element and Buck very much not in his, counting the seconds till he gets to go home. Still, thanks to Stipe, R.E.M. were always enhanced by video. The collection begins with “Bad Day”, before Stipe’s face de-wrinkles as we regress into the starkly exuberant “What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?” and arresting “Everybody Hurts”. Then Stipe regains his hair for “Losing My Religion”.
