TONY PALMER’S CLASSIC SERIES THE STORY OF POPULAR MUSIC.
ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE: THE STORY OF POPULAR MUSIC is the name of a 17-part television documentary series on the history of modern pop music directed by Tony Palmer, originally broadcast worldwide between 1976 and 1980. The series covers some of the many different genres that have fallen under the "pop" label between the mid-19th century and 1976, including folk, ragtime, Tin Pan Alley, vaudeville and music hall, musical theatre, country, swing, jazz, blues, R&B, rock 'n' roll and others. John Lennon was a friend and mentor to Palmer during the production of the series, and its title is taken from the Lennon-penned 1967 Beatles song, "All You Need Is Love". Although punk rock had entered the pop music scene while the series was being constructed, Palmer was refused the funding and time to include the genre in ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE. In this installment in the ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE documentary series, filmmakers examine the confluence of musical changes that took place during the 1960's, with psychedelic and self-indulgent overtones.
PERSONNEL: Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones, Bill Graham, Thomas "Rev. T." Corbishley, Lord Stow Hill, Eric Burdon, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention, Pink Floyd, The Who, Kit Lambert, Bill Wyman, Donovan, Vicki Wickham, Alexis Korner, Clive Epstein, Jim Morrison, The Doors, Myra Friedman, Janis Joplin, The Animals, Peter Rudge.
In this episode turned our attention to the end of the sixties, a time when there was dissent and war in the world and the chaos was reflected in the music with bands splitting up and moving on. When, according to Eric Burdon, the sixties began as "a party". Tony Palmer takes the pulse of rock music as the late sixties gave way to the early seventies with a wealth of unreleased archive material and interviews with its leading figures: Mick Jagger, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Donovan, Eric Burdon and Frank Zappa analyse the echo of The Beatles and the end of the hippy dream at Altamont to explain what rock meant, what the way forward was for the music and what rock meant for society at the time. ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER is subtitled SOUR ROCK as the decadence and hedonism of the era began to leave a trail of talented partiers in its wake. As music is, at its core, a spiritual connector, Palmer chooses an apt destination to conclude ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE. Had work on this undertaking been continued, punk and new wave scenes could have offered an alternate ending. However, considering its time and breadth of scope, it is difficult to find fault with the overall concept or its long, winding, and ultimately entertaining implementation.
