THE DVD COLLECTION Series.
QUEEN ON FIRE: LIVE AT THE BOWL is a DVD/live album by the British rock band Queen released on 25th October 2004 in Europe and on 9th November 2004 in the US. It was recorded live at the Milton Keynes Bowl, Buckinghamshire, England, on 5th June 1982 during the Hot Space Tour. A DVD was released with the complete concert and bonus material. Extras include backstage interviews from Munich and the Milton Keynes gig. Also, a superfluous four minute gallery of allegedly rare photographic stills from the tours. The booklet of pics – with liner notes – in the DVD box is more than sufficient, most would agree. Perhaps most exciting is the Tour Highlights reel, with Queen Live In Japan, 24 minutes of footage of their Tokyo concert. “Dragon Attack” is sassier here than at Milton Keynes, and an tasty honkytonk piano transforms “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. There’s also ten minutes spent at Vienna’s Stadthalle, with “We Will Rock You”s percussion at its most primal, and Freddie donning a boxer’s robe for “Another One Bites The Dust”.
PERSONNEL: Freddie Mercury – lead vocals, piano, acoustic rhythm guitar; Brian May – harmony and backing vocals, guitars, piano; Roger Taylor – harmony and backing vocals, drums, percussion, co-lead vocals; John Deacon – bass guitar, rhythm guitar, additional backing vocals; Morgan Fisher – keyboards, piano.
How they rock you - QUEEN ON FIRE: LIVE AT THE BOWL. During the concert, lead guitarist Brian May had a few minor problems with his homemade Red Special guitar. During both the fast version of "We Will Rock You" and "Dragon Attack", two of the strings broke and he had to change to his Birch Red Special. Before playing "Love Of My Life", Brian May played a snippet of the intro to "Las Palabras De Amor" calling it "a little fiddle around". During May's guitar solo, the pickup switches of his guitar were switched off and May's guitar solo stopped for twenty seconds. The full twenty seconds is on the DVD, but the album version of the performance contains only 3 seconds. His guitar tech helped Brian May to get his guitar going again by simply turning back on the switches. Drummer Roger Taylor and bass guitarist John Deacon performed impromptu solos during "Dragon Attack" and before "Under Pressure", respectively when Brian May switched guitars during "Dragon Attack" and was getting his guitar fixed following his solo. During "Fat Bottomed Girls", Freddie Mercury's voice very briefly slipped into an off-key falsetto during the lyric "in this locality", but the error was fixed for the release of the DVD and CD. During the first verse of "Fat Bottomed Girls", instead of singing the original line "you made a bad boy out of me", Freddie Mercury sang "you made an asshole out of me". Throughout the concert a member of the crowd can be heard using an air horn. The "air horn man" is thanked in the album's liner notes. More than two decades after Freddie Mercury’s death Queen continues to do occasional gigs, and they’ve utilized a variety of stand-ins, including George Michael, Lisa Stansfield, Paul Rodgers and the woefully underappreciated’ 80s pop sensation Terence Trent D’Arby. With all due respect to those estimable talents, Queen without Freddie Mercury is akin to The Stones without Sir Mick. QUEEN ON FIRE: LIVE AT THE BOWL, showcasing the band at its prime, makes this inconvenient fact abundantly clear.
