THE MCCARTNEY YEARS is a three-DVD set featuring music videos, live performances and other rare footage from Paul McCartney's solo career and Wings. The set spans the years 1970 to 2005. It was released by Warner Music in the UK on 12th November 2007, and by Rhino Entertainment in the United States the following day. The first two discs comprise promotional films, from "Maybe I'm Amazed" (1970) to "Fine Line" (2005). Additional features include a documentary about his recent album Chaos And Creation In The Backyard (Creating Chaos At Abbey Road), a film about the Band On The Run album and a feature-length audio commentary from McCartney himself. The third disc includes seven songs from the 1976 Wings concert Rockshow, four songs from McCartney's 1991 appearance on MTV Unplugged, and eleven performances from his 2004 set at Glastonbury Festival. The live footage is also complemented by an optional commentary by McCartney. Other features includes his appearance at Live Aid in 1985, the Super Bowl XXXIX Halftime Show and interviews. All videos have been digitally remastered, and the videos that were originally shot with an aspect ratio of 1.33 : 1 have been blown up to 1.78 : 1. This creates an odd effect for the videos, which now seem cinematic. The videos included as extras are presented in their original form. Also, some videos shot on interlaced PAL sources have been deinterlaced. Some videos on the first two discs have different angles, has an old film effect, full screen, but it is in sepia and resembles a video from a film projector.

It's rather incredible to ponder the fact that with the release of THE MCCARTNEY YEARS in late 2007, Paul McCartney has now been making recordings in various mediums for the better part of 40 years. This three-disc set, packed with videos, concert footage, interviews, documentaries, and more, will surely satisfy the vast majority of Sir Paul's loyal subjects. The dozens of videos can be viewed in either chronological order or as programmed by Macca himself. Ranging from straight lip-synced performances to various conceptual films, they are a decidedly mixed bag. In some cases, the songs are superior to the clips, while in others, the reverse is true. Sometimes both the song and the video are terrific, while some fail on both counts. Of the three concerts included on Volume Three, the best and shortest comes from a 1991 Unplugged show. Rockshow spotlights Wings on tour in '76, and the 2004 gig in Glastonbury, England features McCartney's excellent current band. Extras include McCartney's commentary on several of the videos, footage from Live Aid in 1985 and the Super Bowl in 2002 and, accompanying every DVD menu, various raw and unreleased live and studio performances of obscurities. The late Linda McCartney is featured throughout, of course, and if THE MCCARTNEY YEARS is a de facto tribute to his first wife, it's a more than fitting one. The collection has been meticulously restored and all films polished, re-graded and given a new lease on life in widescreen format with remastered stereo and, for the first time, the original recordings remixed into 5.1 surround sound.
