BACK IN THE U.S. is a live album by Paul McCartney from his spring 2002 Driving USA Tour in the US in support of his 2001 release Driving Rain. It was released on 11th November 2002 with an accompanying DVD to commemorate his first set of concerts in almost ten years. BACK IN THE U.S. CONCERT FILM tie-in DVD proved to be a strong seller as well. BACK IN THE U.S. was the first Paul McCartney album not released on vinyl. In 2002, Paul McCartney embarked on his first American tour since 1993, and in the time between tours, Paul’s, er, sorry, Sir Paul’s life has sure had its share of highs and lows. He released two quality albums of original material, 1997’s Flaming Pie and 2001’s Driving Rain. His loving wife of nearly 30 years, Linda, died from breast cancer. He recorded a potent, cathartic album that featured covers of rock ‘n’ roll rarities. He recorded “Freedom”, a shallow, pandering, jingoistic jingle and he married former model Heather Mills. After such a tough time following Linda’s passing, getting back out on the road seemed like the best thing for the now 60-year-old McCartney to do. In the end, we still have a very good, three hours’ worth of live Paul McCartney music to enjoy. He’s getting on in years, and has a tougher time hitting the higher notes, but he’s still giving it his all, and that’s all we could ask for.

Compiled from McCartney's two concert tours of North America in 2002, BACK IN THE U.S. CONCERT FILM is chiefly a selective biographical film of Macca on tour. Unlike the CD of the same name, which is made up of full-length versions of the songs performed on the tour, the DVD features only excerpts. The film is as much a tribute to the Heather-reinvigorated McCartney as to his music. There's plenty of footage of the new Mrs McCartney accompanying Paul on his marathon of television and radio interviews. Band and crew members pipe on about how much of an honour it is to work with McCartney and fans' of all ages gush hysterically about how amazing it is to see the star perform live. After sitting through three hours of such material, you can't help wishing that something would go wrong. The set-list includes Beatles favourites, tunes by Wings and selected numbers from McCartney's solo back catalogue. Realising the audience's obvious taste for nostalgia, the film mixes shots of the wild contemporary audience with footage of tearful, screaming fans from 40 years earlier. While the songs and audience reactions remain the same, the most touching moment of the film is when Macca performs his tributes to Lennon and Harrison. BACK IN THE U.S. CONCERT FILM appears to break all DVD capacity records. As well as the main feature, there's plenty of extra behind-the-scenes material and bonus songs. The three audio soundtracks, including DTS Surround, more than compensate for any visual shortcomings.
