SILVER & GOLD is a live video by Neil Young performing solo on acoustic guitar and piano. All but the last song were performed at Austin, Texas' Bass Concert Hall during his 1999 solo acoustic tour. Neil Young's SILVER & GOLD concert video was recorded at Austin, Texas' Bass Concert Hall during his 1999 solo acoustic tour and spotlights its namesake album, along with a few of his classics. The intimacy of songs like the title track, "Daddy Went Walkin'," "Long May You Run," "Harvest Moon," "Good To See You," and "The Great Divide" is heightened by the solo live setting, and presented beautifully in widescreen format. While Young's performance is rewarding enough for any fan, one of the disc's drawbacks is its lack of special features inherent to DVD. However, SILVER & GOLD is more than worthwhile for fan's of Young's mature, accomplished body of work. After his brief foray into Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Neil Young returned to solo with SILVER & GOLD. Recorded in the Bass Concert Hall in Austin/Texas, Mr. Young offered the audience a first impression of what was to be released a year later as a long player under the same title. Young presents himself in absolute top form in this concert: Alone, on acoustic guitar or organ, he delivers intimate, bulky versions of seven tracks (including ''Good To See You'' and ''Buffalo Springfield Again'') from the SILVER & GOLD album as well as four selected songs from CSNY (including '''Looking Forward''), which impressively underline Young's strength as a soloist and bring back memories of milestones such as After The Gold Rush and Harvest. The dialogue with the audience between the pieces is sparse, but that's nothing new for Young's admirers, so the Canadian isn't exactly considered the inventor of communication. Instead, SILVER & GOLD is music to be listened to, which despite or perhaps because of the very calm and considered approach, is just bursting with magic. You can enjoy the acoustic Neil Young in this DVD, including new songs that have been sung on stage before the recordings and the theme song of the movie "Philadelphia".
