OUTLAWS AND ANGELS is a live album by American country and western musician Willie Nelson. It was recorded on 5th May 2004, at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, California. It was released on September 21, 2004, by the Lost Highway label. Willie Nelson assembles an all-star line-up for this 3rd annual concert special for memorial day. The concert featured guest performers singing duets with Nelson on each song and was later aired on cable television. This tribute to Willie Nelson was recorded featured the legendary singer-songwriter with some of the biggest names in music. Several special guests appeared with Willie Nelson including Bob Dylan, Kid Rock, Joe Walsh, Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Richards, Toby Keith, Al Green, Ben Harper, Carole King, Lee Ann Womack and Merle Haggard among others. If you're a fan of Willie Nelson then there's no question that you'll want to check this out. There are many very good moments throughout the show as well as some great ones. The highlight of the film is when Willie Nelson and Keith Richards do a duet on "We Had It All." Another great moment comes during "Pancho And Lefty" when Merle Haggard and Keith Richards join the fun. The finale with ''Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On'' with Kid Rock and Jerry Lee Lewis really rocking. While most of the numbers are at least good, the most disappointing moment probably happens with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson covering "You Win Again." It was great seeing the two together but, to be honest, Bob Dylan just wasn't made for duets. It doesn't seem like the two had any time to rehearse and the whole thing is a bit off. With that being said, there's still plenty to enjoy here and it's well worth checking out.

OUTLAWS AND ANGELS is the audio and video counterpart to the Willie Nelson Special that aired on cable television in the summer of 2004. Here, Nelson is surrounded by friends who also happen to be fans. That said, this set is for the hardcore only: the first irritating thing is that the announcer for the evening introduces each guest -- sometimes in the middle of a song! While this could have been easily edited. Secondly, the material, while compelling, is rarely executed in such a way. The ease that Haggard and Nelson display with one another is rarely achieved elsewhere. Williams' duet with Nelson on "Overtime" is truly beautiful, and the pair share an affinity for delivering ballads without overstatement. Likewise, Keith Richards' appearance with Nelson on "We Had It All carries with it real authority, and Nelson's own delivery on the tune is stellar and deeply and oddly, Richards' own vocal, despite his limited range, complements Willie's well in a roughshod way. But these are the clear highlights. The rest, with Haggard, Lewis, Kid Rock, and Richards, is just plain embarrassing. This is a mixed bag to be sure, but it's not without some charm. If only the presentation were better.
