The exclusive concert experience tributing blues legends Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf was filmed at Red Rocks Amphitheater carved into the bedrock of Colorado's majestic Rocky Mountains, over Labor Day weekend on 31st August 2014. MUDDY WOLF AT RED ROCKS was released on 24th March 2015. The main focus of MUDDY WOLF AT RED ROCKS is the three set concert of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf's back catalogue and Joe's songs, though the 4 disc, double CD and double DVD presentation is equally about the contextualization of Joe's own blues career. The video brings the music to life and the CD drips with raw passion and reverence. Joe successfully posits himself as a conduit between the past and present, in front of 9,000 people who confirm that the blues is alive and well, albeit very middle aged. His all star band is formally dressed for the occasion in what calls of respect, to present the gravitas and sensibility of the music. The band is ‘suited and booted’ in white suits and panama hats, Joe dressed in black and the stage, set into the red rocks of Colorado, makes for a spectacular setting. There's also a clever mix of historical clips and a mid-song segue from the past to the present in film. It also provides a great filmic moment when camera work captures the connection between Joe's solo, his band's interplay and members of the audience who rise to their feet in appreciation.
PERSONNEL: Joe Bonamassa - guitars and vocals; Kirk Fletcher - second guitar; Mike Henderson - harmonica; Reese Wynans - keyboards; Anton Fig - drums; Michael Rhodes - bass; Lee Thornburg - trumpet; Rob Dziubla - saxophone; Nick Lane - trombone.
In one fell swoop Joe thrillingly illuminates how the blues had a baby and called it rock and roll. Filmed and recorded in front of 9000 fans, the largest audience Joe Bonamassa has ever played to, MUDDY WOLF AT RED ROCKS is a fine testament to Joe’s ability as a blues player and a great addition to his expanding discography. MUDDY WOLF AT RED ROCKS includes a behind the scenes section, archive footage and concert photos and achieves its aim of paying homage to both Mud and Wolf, though the subtext of the project seems to be that it might be the first of a series of such tributes. A second DVD has four elements: an hour long documentary with Joe and producer Kevin Shirley visiting Mississippi, including a visit to the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale; a twenty minute look behind the scenes at the Red Rocks show, including interviews with several of the musicians; seven minutes of archive footage of Muddy and Wolf, some of which is used in the actual DVD; a gallery of still photos from the rehearsals and show, shown over a fine bonus version of “Who’s Been Talking” which did not make the DVD. The additional DVD of ''Joe And Kevin's Excellent Adventure… To The Crossroads'' is succinctly summarised as being about: Is the fascination of where the music can go, given the right inspiration and given the right kind of palette to paint with. This release broadens its scope with an accompanying documentary that draws you into Joe's Chevy driven road trip with Kevin Shirley. Subtitled, ‘'A Pilgrimage To The Roots Of The Blues'', it takes them to The Crossroads – both of them, in Clarksdale and Rosedale – and leads Joe to answer his own question about the place. Is it the myth, is it a musical place? It's a combination of culture environment, necessity and life experience. Rumor has it Joe is going to continue with a series of tribute concerts, making sure his masters and teachers are remembered in the modern day.
