ELECTRIC CHURCH: ATLANTA POP FESTIVAL - JULY 4, 1970 was released on 25th September 2015 and presents the legendary guitarist in full flight at the 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival before the largest US audience of his career. This film combines color, 16mm multi-camera footage of Hendrix's unforgettable 4th July 1970 concert in it's original performance sequence together with a new documentary that traces his journey to the festival amidst the dark shadow of civil rights unrest, the unrelenting toll of the Vietnam War and a burgeoning festival culture that drew together young people across the country who were inspired by the Woodstock festival. The film details Hendrix's integral role in drawing nearly 500, 000 people to his Electric Church - a dusty, scorching hot pecan orchard in Byron, Georgia some 100 miles south of Atlanta. Together with Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox, Jimi skillfully blended self classics songs with confident renditions of new songs that had not yet been released on album. As a colorful fireworks display stretched overhead across the night sky, Jimi performed the "Star Spangled Banner" to the wild delight of the massive audience. The performance footage of The Experience has been carefully restored from the original negative in high definition. The audio soundtrack includes stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes directly from the original master tapes. This expanded DVD features three songs not seen in the television broadcast. In front of the largest audience he would ever entertain, Hendrix presented himself as the contemporary bluesman he really was at this point in his career tragically, just about two months before his untimely death. ELECTRIC CHURCH references the festival's debacles, including water shortages and fractured paid admissions even as it rightfully glorifies Hendrix as a musician and a rock star. The film frames Atlanta Pop Festival as an outgrowth of the counterculture of the times as well as the racial strife fermenting in the American south in general, a microcosm of which seems set to occur at the site, a racetrack in the small town of Byron, Georgia south of the Atlanta metropolis. Yet the simmering the trepidation of the residents on the one hand becomes balanced by their eventual generosity in the form of distribution of food and use of firetrucks to cool off concertgoers in summer heat. Hendrix' spectacular charisma reaches its flash-point on stage as a direct reflection of the musical maelstrom he and his accompanists created in concert. ELECTRIC CHURCH, then, becomes an elegy for Jim Hendrix.
