The Jeff Healey Band- LIVE AT MONTREUX 1999: Collectors’ Edition – DVD & CD- 2006-

A legend born in the slums of America's Bayou says you have to make a deal with the devil before you can play the blues. Did the master of the underworld demand the sight of young Healey in exchange for the gift of music? Only a few people in high places know the answer. In any case, in his first year among mortals, the young Canadian, stricken with cancer, was stricken with blindness. As in any self-respecting tale, the hero will turn his handicap into his main asset and develop a rather unique way of playing, the guitar on his knees most of the time. A practice not new, since artists like Ben Harper use it regularly, but generally for the purpose of playing slide. With Healey, no bottleneck. He connects the chords and the solos naturally, like the Stones connect (or chained to show a little respect for their old age) the girls after their concerts. For once, a blues artist enjoys a greater reputation in his country than in this old Europe, refuge of so many unknown artists of the blue note. Indeed, Jeff Healey, already happy to have been able to share the stage in his adolescence with big names like Stevie Ray Vaughan or B.B. King, was a hit from his first album, in 1988, exceeding one million copies sold and obtaining a nomination for a Grammy Award. This recognition even allowed him to make an appearance, as a blues musician (how original!) in the cult Road House with the forgettable or the forgotten (don't know anymore) Patrick Swayze. The continuation of the career continues on this beautiful momentum and after a well deserved rest at the end of the 90s, the Canadian and his group set out again to attack the ruthless world of music at the beginning of the 2000s. The concert proposed in this DVD dates from 1999, a little preparation before the triumphant return for New Year's Eve 2000 at Niagara Falls. Professional work! Edge. This is the word that best defines the show given in the musical capital of Switzerland. The Jeff Healey Band, made up of course of Jeff Healey on vocals and guitar, Joe Rockman on bass, Pat Rush on guitar and Tom Stephen on drums, delivers an impeccable performance. No false note. They know what they have to do and do it very well. A powerful, beefy sound with a heavy blues dominance, which goes without saying, but with a few incursions into rock and soul-funk, the whole sticking perfectly to Healey's very hoarse voice. Classical, in the wake of the blues artists of the 80s and 90s, as could do, with eminently much more talent, the very late Luther Allison. However, there is a little je-ne-sais-quoi missing from this concert. Everything is a bit too neat. It's a job well done, but it lacks a grain of madness. The grain of madness! The one inhabiting the true geniuses of the genre, from Son House to B.B. King, via John Lee Hooker. Thus, the songs that stand out from the crowd are all covers (''Stop Breakin' Down'', ''Third Degree'', ''Stuck In The Middle With You'', ''Yer Blues'', ''Roadhouse Blues'', ''Hoochie Coochie Man''). The original compositions turn out to be quite anecdotal in the end. Would the Canadian have been had during the conclusion of his diabolical pact? Finally, let's not sulk our pleasure, especially in these times of musical bleakness. Impeccable musicians, blues, what more do you need?
