Ian Gillan- ACCESS ALL AREAS- DVD & CD- 2015- Demon Music Group Ltd./Edsel Records- 5014797891968- 500 grn
ACCESS ALL AREAS Deluxe Edition two disc (CD + DVD) live release was released on 24th March 2015 by Edsel Records as a part of their Access All Areas Series. The concert was originally recorded for broadcast on ITV and released here for the first time. The high quality recording has been remastered and are featured both on a DVD and audio CD alongside extended notes, new interviews, imagery and memorabilia. The release of the Naked Thunder album in 1990 spelled the second coming of Ian Gillan. His relationship with Deep Purple, the band he graced from 1969-73 and again after re-forming in 1984, appeared to have broken down and he was now leading his own band. This included veteran Grease Band keyboardist Tommy Eyre plus former members of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Material delivered by Gillan and his musicians to an attentive television audience ranged from Naked Thunder highlights like ''No More Cane On The Brazos'', a rocked-up slave work song, through 1982 solo single/Stevie Wonder cover ''Living For The City'' to versions of Purple classics like ''When A Blind Man Cries'' and, inevitably, ''Smoke On The Water''. Recorded in 1990 during Gillan’s second spell out of Deep Purple, this set features the touring band he’d formed to promote his Naked Thunder solo album of the same year. Originally broadcast for a British TV show called Bedrock, that bizarrely went out on ITV at 3am, its irregular appearances over the years have given this show a collectable kudos that it scarcely merits.
PERSONNEL: Ian Gillan - vocals, harmonica; Ted McKenna - drums; Chris Glen - bass; Tommy Eyre - keyboards; Steve Morris and Mick O’Donaghue - guitars.
As for Gillan himself, he seems happy enough to be there. He works the studio audience, who mostly look as if they’re moonlighting from Nottingham’s Rock City down the road, but even he would admit that it wasn’t one of his more productive periods. The four songs from Naked Thunder are just adequate. More interesting are ''Puget Sound'' from Mr Universe, ''I Thought No'', a neat 12-bar jam from Accidentally On Purpose with Gillan blowing harmonica and a sinewy, tough cover of Stevie Wonder’s ''Living For The City''. There’s also a couple of obscure Purple songs. ''Demon’s Eye'' from Fireball and ''When A Blind Man Cries'', an outtake from Machine Head that only became a live favourite once Ritchie Blackmore left the band. Plus ''Smoke On The Water'', of course. Has Gillan ever finished a show without it since 1972?
