Ian Gillan Band- ANTHOLOGY- DVD & CD- 2009- Angel Air Records- 5055011702844- 500 grn
SOUND & VISION Series.
Another delve into the archives of the Ian Gillan Band has resulted in this latest CD/DVD release from the always reliable Angel Air Records. Ian Gillan Band was formed in 1976 and many of the audio tracks on this CD were recorded in Wales at the now famous Rockfield studios during late '76 and early 1977. This was followed up with a nineteen date UK tour promoting the Clear Air Turbulence album kicking off at Cardiff University on 29th April 1977 and finishing at Birmingham Odeon on 23rd May. The tour included a show at The Rainbow Theatre, London where the DVD footage was recorded on 14th May 1977. The audio content is essentially an alternate mix of the Clear Air Turbulence album that eventually saw the light of day in 1977. But Ian Gillan eventually decided these versions were not good enough and the album release and corresponding UK tour were both postponed. The Ian Gillan Band were of course noted at the time for marking a departure for Gillan away from the Heavy Rock bombast of Deep Purple and experimenting with jazz fusion resulting in the uptight grooves of ''Money Lender'' and ''Goodhand Liza''. These mixes were discovered by Ian Gillan Band guitarist Ray Fenwick and are highlighted by some clever arrangements and solid rhythms from percussionist Mark Nauseef. Extras include early versions of ''Apathy'' and ''Mercury High'', both songs that would later appear on Scarabus, and the obligatory live version of ''Smoke On The Water''. This set was released on 22nd June 2009.

DVD - LIVE AT THE RAINBOW 1977.

The DVD part of the package is taken from The Rainbow Theatre in London in May 1977 and for footage now more than thirty years old it has held up remarkably well in terms of quality, although the white jackets favoured by Gillan and Fenwick do place it firmly in the 1970's. There is more of an emphasis here on Deep Purple cover versions and Gillan's signature song, ''Child In Time'', is sublime as always. Slight tinges of Purple-style bombastic rock with surprisingly heavy doses of jazz and funk touches will be enjoyed by the Purple vocalist's fans. This strange brew of fusion and hard rock gives the album its charm and uniqueness. And anyone remotely interested in Gillan's music outside of Deep Purple should start with this album. Ray Fenwick recalls the days of the Ian Gillan Band in an interview that is part of the Bonus Features. Angel Air Records always come up with some interesting releases and this is no exception. Bottom line is this ANTHOLOGY is a unique look back in time in the sense that the jazzy direction of Ian Gillan Band was just a blip on the singer’s radar which only lasted a few years. By the close of the decade his new band Gillan found him firmly back on track and pursuing the hard rock/progressive direction of the group that made him a superstar.
