LEGENDS is a unique concert from the Montreux Festival, bringing together the formidable talents of five musical superstars: ERIC CLAPTON (guitar & vocals), STEVE GADD (drums), MARCUS MILLER (bass), JOE SAMPLE (piano) and DAVID SANBORN (saxophone). All acclaimed in their own fields, they work even better as a group. The music is an intoxicating blend of jazz and blues on classic tracks such as Full House, Shreveport Stomp, Groovin’ and a wonderful acoustic version of Clapton’s LAYLA that’s guaranteed to give you goosebumps. The project was the brainchild of Miller, who handpicked all the members for a brief 11-show tour of Europe, including of course, the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival on the 4th of July 1997. This show was filmed for posterity and the result is the DVD currently under review. The material selected for the set was specifically chosen to emphasize each member. The tracks fall mostly in the lighter bop/jump blues category; something to draw the masses. Fans of Clapton's bluesy side will be well served as "slow hand" unleashes many of his patented solos throughout this 13-track concert. Not to be outdone, the rest of the 'legends' also showcase their chops, albeit in a more reserved fashion. The DVD is professionally shot using many camera angles. The audio is available in 2.0, 5.1 and DTS for your listening pleasure. By and large, Clapton fans will want to purchase this DVD.
