LA PASSIONE is a 1996 British drama film written and produced by Chris Rea. The film premiered on 14th November 1996 at the BFI London Film Festival. The film features a cameo appearance by Rea, as well the same-titled soundtrack also composed by him. The soundtrack was certified Silver in 1997. LA PASSIONE is a novelty in the Chris Rea catalog, but a nice one at that. It’s a film soundtrack to a film he wrote but it sounds like a musical at times. With orchestral string movements mixed between familiar sounding Chris Rea songs the overall is a relaxing lounge affair that even has guest vocals from the legendary Shirley Bassey on two numbers, making one a duet. It’s funny hearing Rea’s bluesy growl amid a sixties style orchestral sweep and although he’s no Tony Bennet it’s still pleasant. If you prefer the more pop/rock Rea then this is not the place to go but if like the cinematic atmosphere then it’s a nice detour and one of the strongest of his nineties albums. It’s not essential but it’s still rewarding as an album in its own right. The film on the other hand ended up being a disappointment for Rea who spent the entire time fighting heavy handed Warner management pressure that was mainly the result of misunderstanding on their own part. On the film soundtrack, Shirley Bassey provides vocals on two tracks: ''La Passione'' and a duet with Chris Rea entitled ''Shirley Do You Own A Ferrari?'' The song ''La Passione'' was a big hit for Dame Shirley Bassey. The soundtrack LA PASSIONE was redone in recent years with new music, and was re-released on 6th November 2015 in a deluxe package. Chris Rea released a four-disc ‘artist’s edition’ of the 1996 soundtrack album to his very personal film project, LA PASSIONE. This is effectively a Director’s Cut of LA PASSIONE audio with Rea, apparently, always unhappy with the version released originally due to different creative visions between him and the label. This new deluxe edition comprises two DVDs and two CDs. The audio discs contain original music from the soundtrack album LA PASSIONE, remastered and some remixed, along with new tracks, some of which are orchestral scores that had been left out of the original. Neither DVD contains the actual movie. The first was re-edited original and new short films to complement the music along with an interview with Chris between each piece. Also included on this disc are new pieces on the Dino and GTO Ferrari’s with new soundtracks to each. The second DVD features a documentary on Wolfgang Von Trips – the Ferrari racing driver who Chris followed as a youngster and who subsequently died racing at the Italian Grand Prix in 1961 – made up entirely of unseen Von Trips personal cine films. Chris Rea has recorded new music for the documentary. The four discs in this deluxe set are housed within a 76 page book, which includes photographs and paintings from Chris Rea. The man’s deluxe editions are normally done with style and are high quality, as you know if you’ve bought sets like 2008’s The Return Of The Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes.
