FROM LIVERPOOL TO SAN FRANCISCO documents the early years of Beatlemania. This presentation features footage of the group from their early days in their hometown to their final live performance in Candlestick Park. This documentary consists primarily of interview footage, television appearances, and lots of archival footage of adoring fans screaming for the Fab Four. This 65-minute film affair is neither the best nor the worst. It's certainly not a documentary, even in the general sense, of The Beatles' career. Instead, it's a rather peculiar overview of some of their media activities during their recording years (1963-1969), without any footage whatsoever of them playing music. With barely any preamble at all, you're launched into Beatlemania in late 1963, the focus being scenes of the phenomenon over the subsequent years. That means lots of clips of screaming fans and airport arrivals and departures, strung together by numerous brief snippets of interview footage with the group. The production and narration are very professional, yet the story line is herky-jerky and fragmentary. So what's this good for? Well, it has lots of semi-interesting-to-fairly-interesting interview clips that don't show up in the more standard or authorized film documentaries of the group. While some are trivial, some are rather intriguing, like a rare bit of interview footage with Ringo Starr's wife Maureen, or the group arriving for the memorial service of their recently deceased manager Brian Epstein. Still, there's the unspoken sense that the producers have tried to construct something out of very little. Far more interesting is the 20-minute bonus feature Beatles Across America, which is a look at the tumultuous U.S. response to John Lennon's infamous remark comparing the group to Jesus Christ. There's a worthwhile backstage interview with them from the 1966 tour in which they are unrepentant about the flap. Most of this bonus documentary, however, is devoted to the negative reaction to the comment throughout the South, with period interviews with the likes of DJs, religious leaders, and teenagers who got rid of their Beatles albums. It's worth it if only for the reaction of one teenage girl in Alabama who, asked if she thought Lennon's observation that Christ's disciples were "thick and ordinary" was offensive, responds, "Wellll...not really. I think I agree with him". They were four ordinary lads from Liverpool who became the biggest rock band the world had ever seen. Wherever they went, they won hearts and sold millions of discs and cinema tickets. What was so special about them that they could fill concert halls and airports form Tokyo to New York with thousands of fans? Why did the dream die and what have the Fab Four left behind? In short, who were The Beatles and how did they conquer the world? In this program, we look at their progress week by week through the best days of their lives with footage of fans and interviews, destinations and encounters, good times and bad. The Beatle Diaries tells you all you need to know about the significant events of the Fab Four's glory years. Travel with John, Paul, George and Ringo from their early days in Liverpool to San Francisco, where they played their last concert together.
