Thankfully, on AEROSMITH ROCKS DONINGTON 2014, you get a band without the twang and high-jinks, playing their asses off for appreciative rock and roll fans like it’s 1975 all over again. It was proof, if any were needed, that Aerosmith remain one of the most dynamic live acts on the planet with a catalogue of songs that is firmly embedded in the hearts and minds of rock fans from all over the globe. The DVD in the package is just an added bonus. Nothing different to the original release (no extras and the three sound options DTS, Dolby Surround and Stereo) but then, if it’s not broke, why fix it? It’s proof positive that if you’re a decent band, you don’t need a flashy lightshow to cover your flaws.

The concert film premiered in movie theaters across America in February 2015. Aerosmith’s 40-year metamorphosis from punky upstarts to drugged-out superstars to elder statesmen has been punctuated by enormous highs (pun intended) and terrible lows but has somehow happened without the band undergoing major stylistic changes or losing their integrity, even when belting out Diane Warren ballads. Even more surprising is that the five slightly grizzled individuals who played to a rapturous reception are the same five who made Aerosmith in 1972. The set is more interesting than the expected greatest hits and the band are, as always, not overly concerned with clinical perfection. Kicking off with their version of The Yardbirds’ version of Johnny Burnette’s cover of Tiny Bradshaw’s ''Train Kept A-Rollin’'', the concert is a celebration of the raucous heart of rock‘n’roll, leavened by the odd power ballad. Highlights come from Aerosmith’s 70s heyday, with songs like ''Dream On'', ''Last Child'' and ''Sweet Emotion'', the band found their groove and they’re in no danger of losing it yet. AEROSMITH ROCKS DONINGTON 2014 is a triumphant celebration of a legendary band at the peak of their powers. Aerosmith closed out the festival like grand marshals at a parade. There was an extra spring in their step and an execution in sound and energy that defies their legacy. Well worthy of a repurchase or even if you missed it first time around. Quite simply it’s amazing and sounds great.
