A CONCERT FILM EVENT.
ROCK FOR THE RISING SUN is a live DVD by American hard rock band Aerosmith. It was released on July 23, 2013. ROCK FOR THE RISING SUN is really more of a concert film. The concert, of course, is only part of the story. The film ultimately aims to capture the relationship between Aerosmith and Japan by combining live footage from shows played around the country along with the usual kind of on-tour interludes you typically see in rock ‘n roll movies - hanging out backstage, talking to the press, traveling from city to city, roller-coaster rides, impromptu appearances, mingling with fans, and shopping for clothing and cutlery. There have been some reasonably inferior live videos of Aerosmith issued in the past, but this isn’t one of them. Setlist is pretty much filled with music from the 70s, 80s and 90s. The best thing is that for every hit like “Love In An Elevator” and “Livin’ On The Edge,” there are heavier, deeper cuts like “No More No More” and “Rats In The Cellar.” Maybe it’s just the band or the choice of material, but nearly every performance is like a fresh slap in the face, a reminder that Aerosmith, after 40 years, is still a kick-ass rock ‘n roll band on the concert stage. Steven Tyler, of course, holds court at nearly every juncture, playing up to the camera, prancing the stage and unleashing that timeless yelp. When he gets out in front with guitarist Joe Perry, the band becomes a machine of strength and intensity. Guitarist Brad Whitford to pick up the slack, when the two interact on “Mama Kin” and “Toys In The Attic.” The ever-cool Tom Hamilton keeps his ego and bass playing in check, getting his moment in the spotlight during the intro to “Sweet Emotion.” Drummer Joey Kramer still swings it hard when he isn’t being molested by Tyler. What makes a damn fine concert film cool is that it’s from a time they went to Japan when the country was in turmoil, and also because they kicked ass on the track listing breaking out several classic tunes including “Draw The Line,” “No More No More,” “Mama Kin,” “Toys In The Attic,” “Last Child” and even have bonus track of “Lick And A Promise.” Japanese rock fans truly appreciate the band coming to play in 2011, only months after a huge earthquake and tsunami and nuclear plant meltdown. The rockumentary does a great job of capturing the live performance and the relationship between band and fan. The interviews dispersed throughout the show are very cool. The band is playing stronger than ever live. They are totally rocking out and the team of Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have such a strong stage presence that you can’t help but watch their every move. The background of Tom Hamilton, Brad Whitford and Joey Kramer all look like rock stars and drive the train as they crank out note after note of maximum riffage. Truth is that they are still a great band - hell they are a much better live band than they were 30 to 35 years ago and the performances on this film prove it. Perry and Whitford are the epitome of guitar heroes. They are bringing back many tunes not heard in ages and the stage show is over the top, much like the strong personalities that are in the band. The show, the band, the songs… all put together make for a strong rock show. If the mojo in the band is telling them to trot out their ‘70s classics, then maybe, just maybe, that special magic that washed over them in the past will manifest inself in the present! Until that time, however, crank this one up and get ready to rock! Long Live the ‘Smith!
