RETURN OF THE CHAMPIONS is a live album by English rock band Queen + Paul Rodgers. It was recorded on 9th May 2005 during the Queen + Paul Rodgers Tour at the Hallam FM Arena in Sheffield, England (except for "Imagine", which was performed in Hyde Park, London immediately after that year's terrorist attack) and released on 19th September 2005. A companion DVD was released on 31st October 2005. This concert is available as a double CD album. The DVD content is virtually identical, but the DVD adds two bonus tracks - ''It's A Beautiful Day'' which initially opened the concert but now appears over the end credits, with short highlights from the concert, and ''Imagine'', which is a separate feature and was recorded in Hyde Park, London, on 15th July 2005. The opening titles of the DVD appear over the first verse of ''Reaching Out''. ''Bohemian Rhapsody'' features footage of Freddie from Live At Wembley. Although some of the footage is the same, here it concentrates exclusively on Freddie, so shots of the audience, Brian and Roger are not present. ''Imagine'' was performed at the Hyde Park show on 15th July 2005, as a tribute to the victims of the 7 July terrorist attacks. The first verse is sung by Brian, the second by Roger, and the rest by Paul. Musically, this live album is solid as a... Rock!
PERSONNEL: Paul Rodgers – lead vocals, guitars; Brian May – guitars, vocals; Roger Taylor – drums, percussion, vocals; Spike Edney – keyboards, percussion, vocals; Jamie Moses – guitars, vocals; Danny Miranda – bass guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals; Freddie Mercury – pre-recorded vocals.
It was very interesting that Queen would choose to team up with Paul Rodgers, since his vocal style and range are so different from Freddie Mercury. Paul Rodgers wisely chose to bring his own blues-rock style to Queen songs rather than to parody Mercury. However, on certain songs Rodgers has to strain to hit the high notes which Mercury does with ease. The standout tracks were the Bad Company /Free songs - "Can't Get Enough", "Feel Like Makin' Love," and "All Right Now". Rodgers is clearly in his element and Brian May & Queen do a great job of session playing. The guitar solos are right on and stick very closely to the studio-recorded versions by Bad Company and Free. Among the Queen songs, the ones that stood out were "Hammer To Fall", where Brian May plays and sings with acoustic star before turning to his electric guitar, "Tie Your Mother Down" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". You'll liked the songs where May and Rodgers were the main singers. But fan didn't like the ones where Taylor sings as much, "Radio Ga Ga", "These Are The Days Of Our Lives", because frankly speaking, Taylor should stick to drummming rather than singing. The only song that fan didn't like was "Bohemian Rhapsody" where they played a video of Freddie Mercury singing for 4 minutes straight. You wouldn't pay big bucks to see a video of Freddie singing the song if you were the audience. Why didn't the band let Paul Rodgers sing the song instead? It felt weird to have the video for most of the song and then to have Rodgers pick it up after the climactic guitar solo. The bonus track "Imagine" was very well-done, with Brian May, Roger Taylor, and Paul Rodgers taking turns to sing the verses. If you like Bad Company and Queen, this is the perfect blend of both bands! If you're a fan of Brian May and great guitar-playing, you got to get this DVD because his playing is just awesome throughout! The sound and picture quality are superb.
